Last night I was talking to my husband about a few threads I participated in yesterday and he jokingly referred to you as my cyber co-workers. But he's exactly right! I have conversations with my office mate that I talk to my husband about and I have "conversations" with all of you as well. I may not participate in all the "non-technical" threads, but I do read and follow all the discussions (would that be "cyber eavesdropping"?).

Anyway, I wanted to let you all know that I appreciate all the assistance I get from those of you that participate in the same fora that I do. I have learned so much from you that I feel this site is part of my development as a professional. I also appreciate all the regulars who share their opinions and views. I enjoy seeing the perspective of those of you who live in other parts of the world.

It's nice to "work" with you all!

Leslie

And may I second that motion?.....[2thumbsup]

I too do not 'participate' in many of the threads through this site, but I do read and learn quite a bit from the topics and related replies.

Kudos' to all of you who do put in your 2-cents worth, I appreciate the guidance. Your words of wisdom that are contributed reach much further than your own corporate and uncorporate offices.

It really is a give and take thing, isn't it? Some people have expertise in certain fields and others in seperate but related ones. I've yet to meet many people with absolutely ALL of the the requisites for a particular post - we all tend to specialise in things we enjoy (and are probably half-decent at), and ignore the more arcane aspects of the job. That's where I find Tek-Tips invaluable (apart from the sense of community, which I find exceptional) - one can leave a thread concerning something thats been bugging you as you leave work and generally speaking come back to well informed responses in the morning. That's the beauty for me, and probably one advantage of our different time-zones! Thanks again to everyone who makes these fora such illuminating (and entertaining!) resources. Have a good weekend my cyber colleagues and friends!

You're absolutely right, lespaul; I hadn't thought of it like that before, but it is really great to have this many "colleagues" at the push of a button.

I work in a foundry (we make iron castings, everyone asks me what that is), where I'm the only full-time programmer. Most of my "technical" colleagues don't have much programming experience; so when I get stumped... I essentially have nowhere to go. I came across this site in just such a situation, and now, after a year and a half, it's my primary resource!

As a college student preparing for graduation in May '04, I appreciate IMMENSELY all the things I've learned from my fellow members here. I've learned the most here in the "Water Cooler" section; I can sovle a programming problem on my own most of the time... but the things I've learned about a work environment, politics, etc. are very valuable to me.

Thanks again to all of you who make this site a useful source of info!

Jesus!! this is like to be in a bar, drinking a beer and celebrating our good team and good work!!

I feel special here, because you are important to me and I am important to you... we all help to ourself to make a great job ang improve our expertise and personal development.

So, let's lift our cups and drink for this great team!

Touché Leslie.

I have noticed that even the brightest stars seem to echo your sentiments in how valuable these forums have become. I find them better than some of the others -- postings with no response, or the "reboot" solution. There are some dynamite solutions with a wealth of experience being passed on from cyber buddy to cyber buddy.

And it is nice to see when a newbie develop their skills sufficiently to conquer their demons.

I also take delight in seeing those from around the world - US, UK, Austrailia and others, and those who obviously use English as a second language all participate.

I work in a very mixed environment with an international coproation, and I am the only IT person at my site. So, like Ben, it is nice to check out how some of the wiz-bang experts do it. (With hard knocks of course;-) )

I think most of us will agree that the IT industry has changed -- things seem to be less fun -- more centralized services, more peon work. And if you are not part of the elite group, which seem to be defined by the geographical location and less so by skill sets, job satisfaction, training and advancement are more challenging to obtain.

So it is nice to bang cyber-heads, and work on academic solutions.

My one regret is that the cyber beer seems to lack punch, the chink of glasses is hollow and the laughter is muted by bandwidth.

And no, I have not yet read Naked Empire - waiting for soft cover version;-)

And I hope the surgery worked out. I buggered up both shoulders skiing (teaching my sister how to handle mogules in a steep, icy chute), and have never been the same since. I still race, but don't place anymore.

Chink, gulp!

The next round is on me.

Lately my life has been full of stress. I come here to have moments of clarity where I can learn new skills and share my skills and opinions. For the most part, I am accepted and treated with respect here.

My contracts have suffered in the current economy and there seem to be large gaps between them. I worry that my skills are getting out of date. This site keeps me sane and rooted in reality. It reminds me that I have a lot of knowledge to share and that I am capable of learning new things.

Some days all that gets me out of bed is the desire to check a TT thread and the need to search the job boards. I come here to be validated, to help others when possible, and to assure myself that life does go on (both privately and professionally).

So here is to you Tek-Tippers....Bottoms Up! [cheers]

Al Gore invented the internet and now it looks like your husband may have invented the term cyber-coworker.

*phew* I'm so glad I'm not alone. ;p
I recently started lurking around the site and found some interesting and helpful tips. I didn't realize there were so many forums on EVERYTHING! I got promoted to IT Mgr last month and still have alot to learn. We just have minor things that need tweeked sometimes so they decided to put it all on me. woo hoo! So now that I have a "cyber team", it should be easier for me to figure things out and look smart in my office. ha ha!

lespaul, i gave you a star for putting into words what has been kinda eating at me (although i didnt realize it). I live in two worlds at work, the technical and the none technical. At work if i explain something too techie it falls on def ears here i get a responce, and maybe even learn a new way to present a problem to no technical staff so they can "get it"

if it is to be it's up to me

I agree whole-heartedly. As a matter of fact I was just explaining the many benefits of being a tek-tipper! I especially like these forums for two reasons:

1. I seem to always get a response.

2. There are many professionals in these forums. I always get expert advice, creative solutions, and serious discussions. People at this site seem to be able to discuss items without taking a differing opinion as a personal attack.

I even share our discussions and debates with my reality co-worker. :)
