Configuring router for DSL modem 3

I'm getting DSL from SW Bell soon, and I've read enough about the subject in various forums to know that I should be able to configure a system such that all my home computers can access the internet via one DSL modem.

What type of router do I need? What type of protocol must it support in order to let multiple computers address the same DSL connection?

Candidates are D-Link DI-704 (4 port firewall), and SMC Barricade SMC700BR. Both support up to 253 users - how is that possible with only 4 ports?

I'm also wondering about the D-Link DI-701, it only has a connection for the DSL modem and a connection for the computer (network cable, I assume), but it states:

"Plus, the DI-701 will allow up to 32 simultaneous computers to connect to the Internet through the same ISP account. It also employs Dynamic Host Configuration protocol (DHCP) to provide dynamic allocation of IP addresses for up to 128 clients on your network"

I'm confused about how this all works. Which should I get to allow my home machines to access the internet through one DLS modem and one ISP. Is my current NetGear 4 port hub for my existing home network of any use in all of this?

Thank you!

I have read in this thread about how to configure a DLink 704 router but it isnt seeming to work with AOL. Does anyone know how to configure this router for AOL DSL access?

Upon installation of my 3060 pci modem, running the software has left me with a network icon (Local Area Connection 2 network cable is unplugged) in the taskbar, and I am unable to establish any form of networking form my pIII 733 PC rinning XP (the one with the modem) to my old P200 which is running win98. Internet connection fine, when I run the diagnostics from the PCI bus 3060 DMT Adapter there is a question mark next to the Internet layer and red cross next to the Network Connectivity...
Please can you help, Olley ( OTB_SLC@xtra.co.nz )

I have a linksys router with a built in firewall, and I need to know how to configure the firewall for mIRC, if someone could help it would be GREATLY appreciated, thanks,

Does anyone know if a Cisco 2621 router can be setup to run ppoe commands (username and password)? I'm running IOS 12.2. I would much rather use this router than a Windows 2000 Server setup as a proxy with the ppoe client running. I have a fixed IP and planning on running NAT inside.
Any suggestions or guidance on this setup?
Thanks,

... Interesting question. Routers, especially a better router like the Cisco 2621, can do most anything, including ATM, Point-to-Point, etc. BUT, the service you indicate -- PPoE -- is usually associated with dynamic (consumer) addressing.

Other point-to-point protocols, such as frame relay, have identifiers called DLCIs, which are used to establish identities. But, with dynamic addressing and no other end point identification or route identification, I am not sure how the router would know who it is.

I have a Cisco 827 as an interface to my STATIC dsl service. Works very well. But, again, this is not a dynamic service.

Also, you may have trouble getting -- even if theoretically possible -- the necessary details (VCI/VPI numbers, for example) from your provider. They seem to be capable only of the most consumer-oriented support these days. And they sometimes REFUSE to escalate your request to higher tech support levels.

As you must know, in some areas the cost of a static service is only about $20/month. Gottcha.

But the Cisco is a great tool for learning about routers! Especially with two ethernet ports.

Mike

Thanks Mike. I do have a static IP address to configure. It is the username and password issue that has me stumped. I'm not sure how to command the router to deliver this information to the ISP. I know the Linksys routers will do this so I just figure, since Cisco devices are more enterprise like, that they would also be able to deliver this service.

... not much time to go into details, but I believe the PPoE authentication phase is the process that requires username and password. This establishes the connection.

But, unless I am mistaken, that is not a process (... making a few assumptions here)that is needed with a static IP such as yours. That static IP, given by your provider, IS your connection.

Now, it may be that a new service, i.e., one that is not yet provisioned (cleared for billing and commencement of service) requires this. But this is just to establish the service, not a requirement every time you log onto the internet.

It now also occurs to me that you may have been given a non-routable IP address, not a true routable internet address, by your provider. Hughes satellite service has done this before. So, you find yourself with a constant address, for sure, but not one that is static in the usual meaning of the term.

Please let me know other details -- I'm sure the answer is simple enough, when the details are understood.

Yours,
Mike

Thanks Mike. I will need to check into this because what is the benefit of saying it is a static IP of 66.xxx.x.xxx if it really isn't a static ip. It only benefits the ISP provider it seems (if this is the case). I wanted a static ip for several obvious reasons (to connect to remotely, provide web hosting, etc).
I might mention I also found that I need to upgrade my IOS to get the pppoe support on my router.

Thanks,

I have 2 PC that i would like to connect to the internet with a moden and a switch (since i would like to have internet in one PC without having one PC allaways runing "server"). I made this connection, but i don't have internet in the 2 PC, just one, the first to have IP.

Hi,

I am receiving the same error message as Marky4556. "Cannot find a PPPoE server" when I try to have my Linksys BEFSR41 router and my Efficient Networks Speedstream 5360 DSL modem. I can connect directly to the modem and using the Enternet software, I can get connected however when I try to use the router to connect I receive that message. I called Linksys and they told that this router will not work with this modem. I find this hard to believe. I tried Marky's suggestion on the exact order to do things however this did not work.

Any help would be appreciated.

For all who are experiencing the problem of "Cannot find a PPPoE server" when using a Speedstream 5360 modem and any SOHO router, Efficient Networks has released a firmware upgrade. The fix corrects an error when trying to negotiate a link with a 10BaseT port, which is what a router's WAN port is. The fix can be found at

Good luck.

Better still, use a wireless router for $25-$50 more which will allow you to use laptops etc. without a wired ethernet connection.
I use the SMC Barricade SMC 7004AWBR router with my SBC supplied SpeedStream 5360 Cable modem. Setup works great!

SMC router also has a backup connection to a serial modem and a parallel printer port to allow complete networked access to your printer without any other computer having to be powered up.

It is the modem that has the issue. Wireless routers still have a wired 10BaseT WAN port that needs to be conected to the Speedstreaam modem. The LAN ports are 10/100 ports and are not subject to the same problems. SMC, Linksys, NetGear all are experiencing problems with this particular Speedstream 5360 modem.

Read the link.

This is a very interesting forum and I've learned a lot.

I just set up my home wireless network (Westell DSL modem and SMC barricade wireless hub + parallel printer port) and want to add a HP all-in-one fax/printer/scanner to the network.

Problem is, I already have a high speed laser printer attached to the SMC print server port. Any suggestions how I can put another printer/scanner/fax on the network? I current have 3 ethernet ports open on the hub.

Thanks much :)

Phil,

That depends on the model of HP All-In-One you have. If it has an ethernet adapter, just plug it into one of the ports on the hub. If it does not have an ethernet adapter, there are a variety of print servers you can purchase.

The following link describes adding a G series All-In-One to a network.

If it is not a G series, you can search for the specific model on HP's site. You can do a Google search for "print servers". Just note that using a print server may not enable you to use the faxing and scanning capability.

Hope that helps.

Thanks much TheOldMan,
My all-in-one is a D series printer (d135) but your reference gave me a starting point. I found the following document in hp's website:

It's for installing a HP Jetdirect 200m print server to an ethernet network. The part is about $200 from hp but I think I can probably get it cheaper from buy.com or some place like that.

It appears to be a self-configuring solution, so its simple to install.

Thanks again for you help,
Phil
