I'm getting DSL from SW Bell soon, and I've read enough about the subject in various forums to know that I should be able to configure a system such that all my home computers can access the internet via one DSL modem.

What type of router do I need? What type of protocol must it support in order to let multiple computers address the same DSL connection?

Candidates are D-Link DI-704 (4 port firewall), and SMC Barricade SMC700BR. Both support up to 253 users - how is that possible with only 4 ports?

I'm also wondering about the D-Link DI-701, it only has a connection for the DSL modem and a connection for the computer (network cable, I assume), but it states:

"Plus, the DI-701 will allow up to 32 simultaneous computers to connect to the Internet through the same ISP account. It also employs Dynamic Host Configuration protocol (DHCP) to provide dynamic allocation of IP addresses for up to 128 clients on your network"

I'm confused about how this all works. Which should I get to allow my home machines to access the internet through one DLS modem and one ISP. Is my current NetGear 4 port hub for my existing home network of any use in all of this?

Thank you!

I have the Linksys router but i cant seem to connect the 2 of my computers to a external DSL modem. can anyone help me on this one?

I have a speedstream 5260 modem, but at present I am running a 3060 internal pci. My ISP tells me to use enternet 300 software. I would like to use the 5260 and a netgear nic card and netgear 4 port hub to link my 2 computers together. My question is does it require this enternet 300 software to log on to my ISP? Can someone tell me in simple terms how to hook the system up? And by simple I mean step by step. Thanks

If this is a modem application than you will need to install
a connection program such as Winpoet 2.0. I'm not familier
with the enternet 300. Jeter@LasVegas.com

We are looking to switch to SW Bell DSL instead of ISDN for our small office internet connection. Is this compatible with Novell Netware?

DSL from SW Bell is compatible with Netware. It should work pretty much the same way as with any other NOS. If you are going share internet access, you would need two nic cards. One with the public IP #(from SW Bell) and one private (192.168.0.1).

I just switched out my efficient networks 4060 (piece of crap) usb dsl modem for the 5260, man what a difference. I also bought the smc barricade 7004abr router/4 port switch, I have set up this combo on two other locations attached to swbell dsl with no problems, but of course my home setup doesnt work!!! the smc router will not connect to swbell. no matter what I do, release renew etc.. its driving me nuts!! does anyone know of a site that may help? I have latest greatest firmware also.

I exchanged my SMC ABR7004 for a new one where I bought it. Actually my intention was to return it for a refund. The guys there were surprised that I had any trouble at all. They said that they had sold dozens of these units with trouble with only one. The are using SW Bell DSL also. I have spent over an hour with the drill this morning and still can't connect. I've been waiting five days for SMC tech support to email any suggestions back. You know, it's almost embarrassing to tell anyone that my day job is configuring Cisco 2500/2600 Routers for a large statewide WAN! There's got to be something that we're missing. I'm about ready to buy a Netgear router and try it with that.

I've changed all Ethernet cables with.
Removed and reinstalled TCP/IP.
There was no EnterNet installed on this machine. (It?s a virgin with respect to that.)
Power cycled all units.
Factory reset everything and tried it again.

I am going to try a different NIC next.

I have spent hours scanning forums looking for hints. Let me know if you, or if anybody else has any ideas!

I have installed two other smc barricades and they work fine!!! one to RR and one to swbell.

apparently this is a firmware problem and they dont have a new firmware available yet.

and to top it off my stupid laptop is refusing to allow me to install the barricade to use my printer. worked fine on my other two pcs. SIGH....

yeah this router thing is embarrassing, I am system support specialist with my net+,a+,Inet+ and ccna. I have had nothing but trouble with DSL from day one. Next time I am going with cable. THis isnt worth the hassle.

I have server 2000, 6 workstations, two remote sites, SWBELL DSL, Cayman routers, how do I configure the router and or PCANYWHERE so I can connect from my remote sites without Hardware VPN. I have software VPN setup and can navigate the server from the two sites but cannot connect via PCANYWHERE.
Help!!!!!!

The reason I need to use PCANYWHERE is because there is a third party software program that is too large to come over the wire, like sticking an orange thru a straw, so to speak, or this is what I am told,so I must somehow connect to an existing file share on the server or another workstation? I am very weak in this area and would certainly appreciate any input you may have.
The Cayman routers are supplied by SWBell and are set to act as Bridges, there is a router at each location.
Thank you

Okay, I need some help. I got EL/DSL with a 5260, installed it with the EL software (WinPoet) on a single ME box. worked fine. 500k+ connects, etc.

want to share the connection and use an SMC barricade to connect. not working. entered my username/password in the barricade config, no connect. nothing. any ideas? can anyone send me a walkthrough on the config, so I can see if I am missing anything?

I dont get this, i am ussually pretty good with the whole lan idea but i dont see how this works. I am using Earthlink dsl with an external modem. I just bought a linksys 4 port dsl router and i have know idea how i can possibly dial out using the router. I need to dial out to earthlink using my computer and get a secure connection, how can i do that through the router and share it with the other computers.

whats this smc barricade thing and i guess i have the same question as mreed how do i configure it.

there is a way to make the speedsteam 5260 adsl modem into a adsl router. i found a web page once about it and lost it. if anybody finds it please let me know.

This is for benderstei.
Your DSL does not dial. It is an "always on". If it uses the enternet 300, that is from my understanding just for authentication, and to keep more "pipe" open for other users. The router is connected to the internetand your LAN. When it sees packets going somewhere it knows aren't on your network it sends them out to the ISP gateway and so on and so forth. Sorry if I misunderstood you.

Anybody having any problems with KVTek's Post Pro. All of a sudden and at the same time 5 different installations are reporting "Unable to Detect External IP". It's like there is some kind of time bomb in the thing and it went off today (Jan 25, 2002). My version is 1.3.0.4 I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

I just got connected with MSN Broadband DSL (SBC PacBell DSL) with an Arescom 800 Series "special" msn version dsl modem. I'm running Win2000 and have a BEFSR41 linksys 4-port switch/dsl router. I'm using the ethernet connection on the modem, there is also an optional USB connection.

The modem works fine plug directly into my computer, but I can't connect through the router.

Does anyone know what the DNS entries are for Northern California to enter into the router. Should this be all I need, besides entering login and password information?

Do I need to uninstall any MSN Software that setup the modem originally?

Thanks for any info.

hi,

i am having a adsl connection on which i have installed a router and connected my lan users to access internet, is it possible vice a versa i.e can i connect to lan from internet via the router on my lan which is connected to adsl line and access my lan computers

:-I

Back in June someone wrote this question, and I don't see than anyone responded. I am now in a similar situation, and would like to know if anyone has any ideas for a solution.

"does anyone have a good sharing solution if you have a dsl modem with only a
USB connection. I was wanting to use one of the dsl/routers, but I'm not sure
how since they all use ethernet connections for the modem."

I have a USB Home PhoneLine 1M Ethernet Adapter. It works fine with my home PC running Win 98, but I also want to occasionally connect it to my work laptop, which runs NT 4.0. I don't need to have access to both PCs at the same time, necessarily, but since NT doesn't support USB, I need to have a RJ-45 connection to that machine.

Help! Thanks.
