My husband recently thought he needed to reload Windows ME because it was acting up. After doing so, now we have to try & start the computer at least 5-8 times, (sometimes more) to get it to start. It will just come up with the HP logo on the blue screen. It also freezes up alot more now. Is there something I can try before I kill him?? Also, since reloading, it says our virus software is not working and it won't let me download it. It says there is some problem in connecting. Any help or suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated.

What kind of errors do you get on boot-up?
Did you get a clean re-load with NO errors?
post back and let me know what the errors are.

My husband decided to try re-loading again. When doing so it came back with the long list of errors:
HP6BX07.D11
HPODJ907.DRV
HPOENG07.EXE
HPO1ME07.DLL
HPO1MG07.DLL
HPO1MN07.DLL
HPOJUI07.DLL
HPOOPM07.EXE
HPOPC107.DLL
HPOPFM07.DLL
HPOPRN07.DAT
HPOU1P07.DLL

As you can see I think we have some major problems. It still won't start without several tries, and it seems slower than before. We have a copy of Windows 95 & 98. Would you suggest using one of those over ME? I want something as stable as I can get. We also use the internet alot. Does the operating system affect your speed or anything when on-line? Thanks :)

Another problem that I just discovered, something called BackWeb Agent keeps running or acting up. What is this and what does it do? Can I delete it? Would re-formatting the hard drive help, or does it sound like it's just a virus or something? Any help is greatly appreciated. :-D

1. These are errors with your Officejet print. Try this for it.

eboot the PC system and select NO or CANCEL if Windows Plug and Play finds the HP OfficeJet printer. Open the Find Files/Folders utility from the Start menu. In the NAMED field type in "hpinstal05" minus the quotation marks. Make sure that the root drive is listed in the LOOK field (this is usually C:). Select the FIND NOW button. If an hpoinstal05 (.txt) appears in the lower window then highlight it and delete it. Delete the working directory HP OfficeJet T Series (9x or NT). The path is probably C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP OfficeJet T Series (9x or NT) Delete all of the temporary files after a system reboot. Browse to "C:\Windows\Temp," select all of the files, and delete them.
Make a temporary folder on your desktop. Right-click the desktop. Select NEW then
FOLDER. Name the folder "OJTEMP." Open MY COMPUTER by double-clicking its icon on the desktop. Right-click the CD-ROM drive containing the HP OfficeJet CD. Select EXPLORE CD. From Explorer right-click the INSTALL folder from the CD and select COPY.
Open the OJTEMP directory on the desktop. Right-click anywhere inside the OJTEMP
window and select PASTE. It may take a while to copy all the files from the CD to the
temporary folder.
Reboot the PC in SAFE MODE (VGA mode for NT operating systems). Click Start, Shut Down, then Restart. After the BIOS header appears (the first screen), press the F8 key every half of a second until a menu appears. A menu will automatically appear in Windows NT. Press the number key that corresponds to SAFE MODE (or VGA mode for Windows NT) in the displayed menu and press return. After Windows boots up in SAFE or VGA MODE, then open the OJTEMP folder on the desktop. Open the INSTALL folder then the OFFICEJET folder. If there is an "OFFICE~1" folde instead of an "OFFICEJET" folder, then rename it to "OFFICEJET". Double-click SETUP.EXE to begin the installation. If the EXE extension is not shown, open the SETUP icon that looks like a small blank window. If the errors still occur, then this is probably a hardware compatibility issue. Try installing from normal Windows session using different color depths and display resolutions, reboot between changes (a color depth of 16 bit color is recommended). If the video hardware has anydesktop/Windows altering or enhancing features then disable those features, contact the vendor of the video hardware for assistance if necessary.

2. Yes, It is safe to delete backweb. You can also go to Start, run, in the white box type msconfig, go to the start-up tab and uncheck BACKWEB and anything else you do not want to run at start-up.

Is the problem with the printer causing the computer not to start? It's really getting annoying have to start, then shut down 8 or 10 times just to windows to load.

Can you get to the boot menu? (1)If so start the computer in Safe Mode. When you get the computer up go to Start, RUN, in the white box type msconfig. Go to the start-up TAB.
Uncheck anything to do with the printer. Do you get any errors when it will not boot?
Yes, I think there is a problem with the printer. I think you have some double files after the dirty load. (2) I would
try uninstalling the printer and then reinstall it.
do number one first. Did you try any of the step above in the Oct 7 answer.

Personally I think you have a virus on your computer. You also probably have the same device loaded more than once if you were to look under the device manager. If you haven't got important files and have all of your program disk the easiest solution would be Reformat the hard drive and start from scatch. However, this will take a little bit of time if you have a bunch of programs. If you can't seem to uninstall your anti-virus program so that you can re-install it, there is a very great possibility it is a virus. Run your anti-virus program from Dos if you can and see what happens.

Hi,
Even though it's been awhile since my first post, I'm still having the same problem. We totally re-formatted the hard drive, but the computer still takes anywhere from 3-10 times to get it to start. Could something be getting weak inside. We usually have it on all day if we're using it or not just because it's such a pain to start, but after about 4-5 hours, it starts getting slow, won't load pages on the internet, and usually ends up locking up. I am to the point of believing that a computer only lasts about 2 years, since every one I have ever had has starting having major problems around that time. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated, since I'm really sick of this thing.[curse]

Hey It has been awhile so let's try this go download AD-AWARE 5.8 from Run it you will be find stuuf that is slowing your system down. This is porgram that hunts for spyware and deletes it.

Post back and let me know what you find.

renajb,

If its taking so many attempts to start it, there's almost certainly a hardware problem. First thing I'd do is simply open the case and check that all the cards are seated properly, all cables are intact (particularly check the IDE cable connecting hard drive to motherboard for damage to the connectors at either end) and connected firmly and that cpu fan is running properly.

Problem starting makes me think it maybe motherboard/bios or hard drive related (eg, bios is not loading the master boot record from the drive for some reason). It may do no good - but also no harm to write a new master boot record (you can do this from a dos box within ME - just type fdisk /mbr at the prompt).

The freezing/slowing down after a while could be just down to ME (it just does that - and its the worst of the M$ operating systems) or hardware problems or a combination.
I take it machine is out of warranty?

I have windows Me 2000 when i start it its fine i get the logging box then either I push cancel or I put my password in then ok but then it just stays in the white background and it wont show anything i cant fix it?

aldanac,

you should really have started your own new thread for this question.

Soem history would be useful - like when did this start happening, and did you change any hardware/software shortly before this? Can you get into safe mode? (press F8 key before windows starts loading).

You could try restoring a recent before the problem started version of the registry. Boot from ME boot floppy ( if you need to get one), and type scanreg /restore at the dos prompt. You should get a choice of dates to restore from - pick the latest before problem started (if this is available).
