Bad Analog Card?

I have a fax line that is not ringing. Has dial tone, can dial out, two-way talk is fine. And, if I clip a butt set on the line and dial from my cell phone, I can answer in talk mode (even though the butt set doesn't ring).

After some testing, I discovered that there is another fax line on the same card that is doing the same thing. I did a trace on one of the lines while dialing from my desk. Results follow:

% ACTIVE TN 004 1 14 06
% ORIG 004 1 04 05 0 MCR MARP 0 5574 2616
% TERM 004 1 14 06 MARP 0 5707 500
% TDTN 0 SLOT 10 PTY SLOT 68
% DIAL DN 5707
% MAIN_PM RING AUX_PM
% TALKSLOT ORIG 70 TERM 74
% EES_DATA:
% NONE
% QUEU RING
% CALL ID 0 44

Everything was working fine until just recently (sometime before today ... not sure when, but it was reported today).

Any thoughts? Other than hopefully not a bad analog card, that is?

Thanks,
Darin

Yep check the ring generator ... we even had an issue with that on our Siemens system.
I don't know if the 61C has any jumpers or switches (for ring voltage or other) that can be altered ... would there be anyone that would have changed those 'just for fun'? I have only worked on 81, 11 and CS1000E

No, there is nothing to be fooled with on a ringing generator. Just open the cabinet and see if the green light is on or not. If not, turn it off and try reseating it then turn it back on. (If this is an AC switch, it is the bottom breaker on the left of the module)If it doesn't come on, replace it. If the replacement doesn't come on, disable the system monitor and unseat it. Then I bet it will work. You might try the system monitor removal 1st if reseating it doesn't work. I have seen defective system monitors cause ringing generators not to work a lot.

if the rg is od, all analogs on that shelf will have the same symptoms.. i saw one years back on a remote shelf that lost ring output due to a missing ground..

Sounds like a bad card to me. It might resolve itself just re-seating the card - that could at least buy you some time.

agree.. 90 percent of the time, it will be a single card.. i never reseat.. i guess because we have ample stock on hand.

My bet is on the ringing generator. Someone post the odds. Line card vs. ringing generator.

How about 10 to 1 in favor of the ringing generator :) Maybe just wishful thinking ... should have a chance to check today.

Haven't had a chance to get to the switch room, but before everyone starts laying odds, here's some more info:

TN 4 1 5 3 is my desk phone (2616), and it rings fine.
TN 4 1 14 4/6 are the two lines that aren't ringing.

Pretty much rules out a ring generator on the shelf, doesn't it? Found a couple other analogs on another card this morning that aren't working. I think I might have two bad analog cards.

Nope, I bet every analog on that shelf isn't ringing. Ringing generator doesn't affect digital sets so they will ring fine.

Then all of the Ring gen posters were right - the Ring gen is not ringing, since you found other analogs on other cards not ringing. Not two bad cards, but one bad Ring Gen

Looks like a combination of ring generator and line card(s).

Tested some other non-functional lines on another analog card on the same shelf, and none of them are working at all.

First thing I noticed when I walked in the switch room was a red light on the front of the cabinet. I suspect it has to do with the lack of a green light on the ring generator.

No lights on any of the cards, but there are two that I know are having problems.

I suspect I would want to check the ring generator first, as it might be the culprit it both cases, right?

I haven't dealt much with the hardware side of this system ... anyone willing to give me a step-by-step on how to cycle the ring generator and re-seat the analog cards? The ring generator has instructions on it, but I want to make sure the CB2 won't power down digital cards, etc.

Thanks,
Darin

There should be no lights on the cards, just turn of the Ring Generator and unclamp it and pull it out then replace with a good one

Do not turn the other Power Supply off it will keep the rest of the cards up

Good advice from telebub. I have seen this many times.

How do I disable the system monitor? I presume that if I do that and the ring gen comes back up, then it is the system monitor that is failing?

By the way, repeated the ring gen and its still not working ... Ready to order a new one if the system monitor doesn't provide any answers.

LD 37
.stat - hopefully one will be designated sysmon or xsm, usually it's tty 0 but not always
Whatever it is:
.dis tty x

Then pull the NT8D22 System Monitor card out of back of pedestal with your ringing prob. Preferably on off-hours - sometimes this will knock down the column.
This may resolve ringing problem.
Reseat system monitor. Make sure analog TNs still ring if problem went away with card out. Otherwise you may have a bad NT8D22.

LD 37
.enl tty x
.stat xsm - this will check for PWR alarms on all the columns.

Thanks, everyone. I'll try disabling the system monitor this evening or tomorrow morning and see if that does it.

One question, though ... hypothetically, let's say the whole column goes down as StanleySteamer pointed out could happen ... what will I need to do to get everything back online? I'd much rather know ahead of time than try to scramble for information after it happens.

Thanks!

Leave the system monitor out and turn the breakers back on. Then obtain a replacement system monitor, set the dip switches, and plug her in. Re-enable the XSM TTY port in LD 37.
