Some advice please.

I have been trying to enable the auto disconnect feature on a friends PC (WIN 98SE) so he will be prompted to disconnect when quitting IE5. I have scoured dial up properties and cannot find where to switch this option on. It is very annoying when he forgets to click on the icon in the system tray and his phone bill is HUGE!

Many thanks.

Have you tried posting this query to the Internet Explorer forum?

If all else fails you can enable the Idle timeout of the connection for say 10-15 minutes.

Microsoft has acknowledged a problem with IE5 in that respect in article Q235666. You have to call them to get the fix though!!!

I don't know if it is still available, but you may want to try IE5.5 Beta to see if the issue is resolved.

Doug
dxd_2000@yahoo.com

This is an old question but to enable (re-enable) the auto disconnect feature, open Control Panel, Internet Options, Connection Tab, Setup button, Advanced button -Place check in box that says "Disconnect when connection may no longer be needed"

Something discovered awhile back with Adpatec's CD burner software installed on Windows'98 computers.
The registry loads "CreateCD" that sits in the system tray.
Even with "Disconnect when connection is no longer needed" checked as enabled, the auto disconnect feature will not prompt the user to disconnect as long as "CreateCD" sits in the system tray.
Open MSCONFIG, Start Up tab. Remove check mark beside "CreateCD" and re-start computer when prompted to do so.
As long as the "Disconnect when connection is no longer needed" has been checked, you'll be prompted to disconnect after closing either Outlook Express or Internet Explorer with the CreatCD disabled on Windows start up.
