Hi There,
I'm using version 4.5 with SP1. I've noticed that the cpu time for mcafee is extremely high, also since installing, access to files is noticably slower. Anyone else noticed this problem before? If so do you know of a fix? Thanks in advance.

Can you give us a little more detail? Like what the configuration of VS is?

If you have both "All Files" and "Compressed Files" options selected in VShield, you will see a slowdown since it tries to scan all files.

Regards,

AVChap

Yes, I have noticed this in a few clients, and they all had one thing in common, first it started with CCMail, it was scanning their mails, which caused it to be terrible slow, then a few other apps caused it too...
The thing that sorted it was to not scan .ini files. This increased the speed immensely. Jay~

I, too, am experience the same issue. However, with the recent viruses/worms, I cannot stop scanning .ini files.
Any other suggestions to decrease cpu utilization while running this application. I am running IIS 4.0 on an NT 4.0 machine.

We have the same problems. Playing with the exclusion list has helped some, also you can turn off scaning of outbound files. This improves performance a lot, if you can live with the decrease in protection.

Well I have since given up on Mcafee. Plus, in my opinion, their new "online" viruscan for the desktop is absolute crap, with no activity log to look in. So my solution....switch to Norton Antivirus.

Geez people, you're talking about several products in the same thread :(

For starters, look at the FAQ areas for hints where to get help.

Now, you all need to do the following:

1. Upgrade to VS 4.51 SP1
2. Install the latest engine (4.1.60) and DATs (4194)
3. Make sure that you DON'T have "All Files" selected in VShield.
4. Make sure that you have "Scan floppy on exit" unchecked, especially if you're using a notebook/laptop w/o a connected floppy drive.
5. If all else fails, RTFM. Look in the "Known Issues" area. It should state whether NAI/McAfee already knows the problem.
6. If not, read my FAQ again on how to get help.

Hope THIS helps.

Hate to burst your Bubble AVChap, But VirusScan 4.5.1 w/SP1
is just as bad as 4.5 I have several machines on my network that won't even run with VirusScan Installed. Premium Support with NAI is no good either. Their first response was uninstall and reinstall. Their second was its not their product causing the problem. If changing to Nortons was an option for me it would have been done the day after I installed the Mcafee crap on all my Servers..

I agree, AVChap, I too used to be a great supporter of McAfee, however I tried 4.5, 4.5sp1, 5.x and above, each one of them were just as bad in a corporate and home user environment. Logging the CPU cycles the AVSyncmanager process, on an idle or busy computer, logged more CPU time than anything else. This was especially true in a Windows 2000 Professional environment. I tried everything suggested by tech support, plus a few other tricks that weren't (and I'm not exactly new to A/V software either, especially McAfee) It got to a point where I had to take it off. From now on I recommend Norton. Lets face it, McAfee have dropped the ball over the last 2 years.

Here's a small tidbit that can help with the bootup.
The overall slowness, I'll look more into it. This does save some system resources on bootup...
But for now..
Get rid of the splashscreen. In the registry, change this value..
\\HKLM \ Software \ Network Associates \ TVD \ Shared Compoenents \ On Access Scanner Vshield \ System Scan \ General

Set the value for the dword variable bSkipSplash which you'll find in the above registry key to 1

NOTE** If you install a Service Pack, this Value gets reset to 0. Just a FYI.
Let me know if this helps.

We use Mcafee VirusScan 4.5.1 SP1 and don't seem to have any issues with it. What we have done is enabled only Inbound scanning and disabled Outbound scanning and selected it to scan All Files. If you choose to use User Specified Files, removed the DLL extension of files you wish to scan. On initial startup of a Win2K box, the DLL causes a lot of scanning to take place.

Other than that, I haven't seen any issues with VirusScan 4.5.1 SP1 and like it more than VirusScan 4.0.3. With so many viruses, I wouldn't be surprised that the scanning takes so much more time.

Guys,

I'm not advocating that you stick to McAfee (I myself have six (6) AV proggys installed on my home machine but I only have one (1) doing on-access scanning. And guess what, it's McAfee. It works for me. I've configured it the way I want it to be. I'm not in a position to tell you what works for you. I'm here to try help.

In that previous post I wrote, I outlined the steps to take IF you're having problems with the product. Now, if after taking all of the steps YOU THINK was required and is still having problems, it's up to you to decide whether to ditch McAfee and go with something else.

I agree with VictorySaber. It's all in the manner of configuring the product. It's not fair for any AV product to be branded as "full of bull" if you're having problems with it. Ask for help. I'm pretty sure there are a lot of people who'll be willing to give some advice.

As for your problems with Premium Support, I believe it's a matter of communication. If you can describe your problem clearly and give them error/event logs and screenshots, they'd be in a better position to assess the problem. Venting on those poor tech support people simply doesn't work.

I've handled networks as big as 10,000 nodes, using McAfee's Management Edition and ePO. Managed to make it work, too. It's a matter of working with the vendors to make the product work. Patience is a virtue I had to learn to work in this field.

Hope this clears up "my bubble"

The recent DAT files also cause PC's to hang and become slow. I find if you delete the latest dat file and revert to the previous one, ops become much faster Jay~

My new Tae Kwon Do website is up and running!!

I have discoverd part of the cause to this problem.
If you install McAfee internet Security (MIS) on a networked PC and the network is switched on it is OK. However, if you switch off the other LAN PCs, as I did for security reasons, then something in XP or MIS keeps hunting for the LAN and makes the SVCHOST.EXE file/page file grow in size.
Simmilarly if you install MIS on a standalone PC, before installing either a modem or network card then the same problem occurs.
If you only install the McAfee virus scan there is not a problem. It only occurs when you instll the firewall component.

I believe this was posted as an answer to another question on the forum. :)

I'm relieved to find we're not the only company out there having a SLOW NETWORK problem with McAfee.
We run Win2k server on XP client machines, AVD is configered with default scanning and not outbound scanning, network associates folders all have full access for users, latest patches/engine/dats all installed and the 'mother' still takes up to 10 seconds to open a word doc, 17 secs for excell and some folders open...flash once....then dissapear!!!! you have to exit the folder and re-enter to view the contents!
THERE MUST be a solution as this VERY expensive software is strangling my network.
P.S Is there a way to get my money back and switch to NORTONS?
any other help appreciated.

Just found this on the mcafee site
anyone understand it, looks promising but is it Koscher?

There are a lot of complaints in this tread and even one person listed all the versions he has tried. BUT none of the versions were 4.5.1SP1 which is what you should try. also people are mixing the retail product with the corporate one, and assuming that 5.0 is a upgrade to 4.5.1 which it isnt. also if your having problems with the new dats, ILL BET you dont have the following configuration as AVCHAP has suggested I have not seen problems with the new dats at all in the suggested config of

4.5.1 with Service pack on, with 4.1.60 engine

run this and the new dats run FINE.

I have however seen problems with older scan engines or older product versions...

the main point here is get your product to the latest versions before you complain, as bugs are fixed and released in product upgrades....

one thing your SCAN ENGINE is very important!!!

if you have an old scan engine you ARE NOT able to detect ALL viruses!!!
