Hi There,
I'm using version 4.5 with SP1. I've noticed that the cpu time for mcafee is extremely high, also since installing, access to files is noticably slower. Anyone else noticed this problem before? If so do you know of a fix? Thanks in advance.

Just a quick dumb question :)

What exactly does disabling the inbound/outbound files in virusscan do?

If you disabled both, would you be utterly unprotected?

TIA

Flick.

Inbound files are those files being "saved" or "written" to the target PC. Outbound files are those being "read" or "accessed" from the PC/Server.

If you disable both, you're just using up CPU resources since it's not going to do anything but stay in memory :)

I have Mcafee 6..02, engine 4.1.60, Dat.Files 4217.
I have had many problems with bad update, patches, and the tech help sucks. My computer runs slooow when virus scan is enabled.I have think I will give up and go to Nortons,I have it on my laptop and it works great.

Hi

Install the hotfix for engine 4160 and you will be fine,
if you are running Win 9x or ME?

It always help if you tell what OS you are running.

Cheers

I spoke to the support desk on several occassions about Pc's giong slow, no-one suggested any of the above options. I tried changing to EPO, but my users complained so much about the slowing down I had to remove it. Network Associates totally denied that I had a problem. I asked them to give me the recommended configuration for 75 workstations, they couldn't tell me. I have now moved to a different provider, even though I have several months to go on my licence.

Hi
This hotfix looks just the thing for me, and many of my clients, who have experienced slow-downs and jerky mice/system clock slow downs.

But I have a question first, most, if not all, when I right click on the V Shield, get this information:

McAfee VirusScan v5.21.1000
Virus Definitions: 4.0.4221
Scan Engine: 4.1.60

I see you guys mostly talking about 4.5.1, so will this fix work for me?
main OS's are 98se, 2K, and a few XPP

cheers

VirusScan 4.5.1 is the corporate version. What you have is the retail version (albeit outdated). The engine fix works on the corporate version AFAIK. If you need it, try running the Instant Updater.

The scan engine hotfix does work on Retail versions too. I have not actually tried it on the Corporate versions but have had success with it on versions 5,6 and 7.

Here's the link again in case you didn't see AVDude's post above;

Remember, it is for 95/98/ME only!

Our network had two workstations (Win 2000) with very sluggish network drives (3-10 seconds) for browsing to a folder. They were using the latest versions of McAfee(4.51 SP1) as these updates and upgrades are scheduled each night. I noticed that there were a large number of virus scans occuring on a directory I never was aware of before C:\winnt\CSC (It is hidden). This turned out to be a directory used for Client Side Caching by Win 2000. Evidently, when you browse to a network drive files were being cached locally.

The network speed returned when CSC (Client Side Caching) was disabled. Evidently the CSC was caching network files locally which caused a double whammy (Virus Scanning of the cache files and deluge of files on the workstation). This "feature" can be disabled through Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/Off Line Storage.
