Hopefully somebody out there has already done what I am trying to do and can help me avoid a potential problem and wasting time.

I am planning to replace a 406 with VoiceMail Pro on 3.2 with a brand new 500 V2 and 8.0, there is still a lot of confusion with my distributor and Avaya about the Voicemail Pro license and if moving the license will require to purchase an essential or upgrade license to be able to go to 8.0 on the new device, has anybody performed this type of upgrade already?
What about the 90 day free upgrade is that still available? What if I first upgrade to 7.0, do I need to purchase the upgrade or essential license to go from 7.0 to 8.0 during the free 90 day upgrade period?

Do this:

1) install the new IP500V2 on release 7.0
2) do a license swap to the new dongle.
3) buy an upgrade license

I explain you why

When you install it on 7.0 and do a swap then you have a working system.
Now you need to get it on 8.0 with the upgrade license.

This is much cheaper then buying the 8.0 essential edition license.

tlpeter, I just want to confirm... IT IS NOT FREE..right!? Avaya ATAC told me it was but my distributor insist it is not...!
I already sold the system and have the PO and if I have to pay extra, then the system is staying on 7.0 because it is coming out of my pocket but if I can upgrade without paying for the license then the system is going to 8.0, that simple...!
I just don't want to spend the time experimenting, I have a very small window of time to replace the system, and just to be extra clear that upgrading Voicemail Pro from an older system to a new one is no longer free, and to avoid further potential problems with our customers ...the 90 day free upgrade is no longer free also, right? Once you lock yourself on 7.0 you are staying there unless you pay for the upgrade, even if it is a brand new system, correct?

It has nothing to do with VMPro!

8.0 introduced a smaller price difference between running an essential edition and a preferred edition.

This just means Avaya had a reason to ask money for running IPO mode (essential edition)

The R8 essential edition is $500 cheaper and the essential edition costs $500

This means when you upgrade from 7.0 to 8.0 you will need an upgrade license.
This license will cost $99 (32 users or no modules) or $199 (more then 32 users or expansion modules)

When you have a "new system" then you will need an essential edition license to get it on IPO mode.
Also without an essential edition license the preferred edition license will not work.

when you buy an upgrade license for 8.0 then you will get a virtual essential edition license so the preferred edition license will work and you will have a working 8.0 IPO mode.

I hope i am clear :)

tlpeter,

No, I am still confused...I am moving a Voicemail Pro/preferred license from an old 3.2 dongle to an SD card:

All I want to know is if I am going to install 8.0 without any additional cost, yes or no?

Avaya ATAC send me some information, but it is also confusing because it says that you do not need it and then in parenthesis its says you need it...[neutral] What??

IPO R8 Product Update V4.0 12/11/2011
10.4 Upgrading

...
Existing customers with Preferred Edition will not need to buy an Essential Edition license for their system. The Essential Edition license will be implied (upgrade license is required).

no, there are extra costs -> essential edition license.

This is what i mean with the upgrade license.
When you upgrade from 6.x or 7.x then you will get a virtual essential edition license.

Either way you will need an essential edition license for VMPro (preferred edition)

But on the otherside you get mobile twinning on every extension for free (without call control)

Haven't tested it, but i guess it will work. Only call control won't work.

I read a bit about the free Mobile twinning and how great that is...I gladly trade the mobile twinning and the VPN for 2 phones for the essential license in a heart beat because to use twinning you need PRI or SIP trunks and 95% of my sales are analog lines where twinning is totally useless.
The other thing that is going to kill me is that I am quoting systems with a 3 or 4 SCN and now, according to what I have read, and please correct me if I am wrong, I am going to have to upgrade them to Preferred Edition adding $2,000.00 to $8,000 to the proposal...one thing I am sure, my competitor selling CISCO is going to be very happy...!

Only one system in the scn needs to be preferred for have vmpro or using user licenses.

tlpeter, agree but it is still $2000.00 more than what I originally quoted, my best guess is that they are also going to stay on 7.0 if they project is approved....!
This makes me very uncomfortable because I always like to sell the latest release and technology but now I cannot any more because of all the license changes that are making the systems that I already quoted more expensive...I rather Avaya focuses on ways to make the product better more exciting than playing with the licenses and putting a large chunk of my business out of contention...because having to go through this nightmare for every release is not exciting to me it is a true nightmare....

You do not need the preferred edition license when you do not have user licenses like power user.
You will need it when you have those licenses somewhere.

OK guys I am very confused and any help will be appreciated, I just loaded 8.0 on a brand new IP Office 500 that I loaded up with a DS8, a VCM32 and a PRI on the mezzanine of the VCM32 and to my surprise I see these licenses already loaded on the system:

Advanced Edition x 1
Avaya IP Endpoint x 12
Customer Service Agent x 5
Customer Service Supervisor x 1
Essential Edition x 1
Mobile Worker x 5
Office Worker x 5
Power User x 5
R8+ Preferred Edition (VMPro) x 1
Receptionist x 1
Teleworker x 5

And under expiration it displays Never !!! What is going on???? Did I hit the jackpot or me and my customer are going to have a rude awakening in about 90 days?

It must be a bug that it shows never.
I saw it too and it should show a date.
Believe me, it will stop working after a 100 days.
Avaya says 90 days but it is actually a 100 days.
It gives you a bit more space.

What you see is the trial licenses that you get on a brand new system.
When you add any valid license then all these licneses will disappear (except the 12 ip endpoint licenses.

I loaded the additional end points licenses and all of them are still there showing expiration Never...! I also already rebooted the system several times...should I try clearing the system and trying again?

I don't know.
You could try.
When they still appear then it must be another bug.

IP endpoints will never expire, they come as part of the VCM or are bought extra, you don't get free trial licences generated, anything that you have not paid for that you normally would is a trial and will expire even though it may not show a date as at should :)

I don't like, this is just adding one more element of confusion to the mix because if you miss to tell the customer about this and later they see them, start using the new features, they like them and begin to depend on them and then after 90 or 60 days the feature quits working, you can very much set yourself up to have a very heated discussion with a potentially angry customer...of course eventually we will get used to all of this and start deleting everything as part of the initial stage or better yet telling the customer about it and have them try it out and with luck up-sell the feature.

My guess is that some of us will learn 8.0 the hard way in about 2 or 3 months from now when these trials begin to expire.

Wenever Avaya say they have simplified the licencing, expect the exact opposite and you will never go wrong, this is the third time they have done this and every time you end up with lots of confused people, usually the Disty's are the most confused for some reason :)
