Can anyone give me some guidance on a best procedure to do this upgrade? Can I take the database directly from the 4.2 and load it into the new 8.1? I understand I may need a digital 8 and analog 2 in the new 500 V2 or the new combo card? I will be reusing the original 400 V2 Digital and Analog Exp Cabinets and 5400 series sets. There 7 sites for me to do. On 2 of them i will reuse the PRI by installing a legacy carrier card. Will these PRI's contain all of its current 24 channels without the need for addional licenses beyond 8? On 5 of the sites without PRI I will reuse the VCM 4 via a legacy carrier card. The two sites with PRI and VCM 24 I will be installing a new VCM 32.I have included some of this other information in case anyone wanted to shoot holes in my plan. I understand all new cards might be the best but of course $$$$ come into play.

Upgrade the IP400 unit to the highest available version and then load the config onto the IP500V2 8.1
It will ask to convert the file and to keep the stations which were available on the IP406.
If they get lost, no big deal it are only eight users at max.
The PRI's on legacy card's dont need the channel license.
If you have IP Phones then consider re-using the VCMs on a legacy card as each VCM channel enables three IP Endpoint licenses save some bucks
If you have a SCN then don't forget the Voice Networking licenses, they were not needed on a IP400 but are mandatory in IP500

Things to do after the upgrade:
Check the complete config:
System
Lines
Extensions
.... everything.

Management alsways think a upgrade is a piece of cake but the cake is made of concrete, you'll really have to spend some time on it.

Thank You Intrigrant,

This customer has 7 sites. All systems have advanced scn networking unlimited licenses. We didn't start working on IPO until release 6.1 and the 500V2 Chassis (Former Nortel Exclusive Partner). What is the highest version software the 400 V2 will handle? I have seen other threads where there was talk of the 4.2 having to go to 7.0 or 8.0 before the jump to 8.1. Your thoughts? I am getting cross eyed at the AVAYA web site and support on this example is almost non existant. The response from this site is where i seemed to get my quickest and best answers these days.

The 401DS (SOE) can go up to 4.2
The 403DS can go up to 3.2
The 406V2 can go up to 6.1
The 412 can go up to 6.1

So you could upgrade the 406 to 6.1 (you will need to go to 5.0.999 bootloader first) and then import it to the 500v2.

BAZINGA!

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!
