Hi there,

I have my w2k newly set up and the other day I was surfing thru
some adults site and now I got my penalty. The machine now will
start up with three programs and the first one sweap across the
screen so fast that I cannot even see it. It seems to be a dos
program because it opens a dos prompt window like the one
in 98. The second is also like that but I can read from the title
bar as "c:\winnt\wer" Both would terminate on their own and
the third come up which is one of my browser Netscape 4.78
automatically locking into a site called the 'evidence-eliminator'
with all its ads (which in my opinion looks very threatening and
disturbing because it uses terms like 'you are guilty' and others)
I know how to modify the startup with 98 (msconfig right?) but
with w2k, I had no clue. Can someone please tell me how to
wipe these guys out?

Furthermore, my MSword could not work (I don't remember if
it did before the incident). I tried to repair it but in vain. I don't
know if it is because of this intrusion. I was told the repair was
ok but when I tried to click on the Word icon, it just tell me that
winword.exe has an error.

I really appreciate your help

If you have access to a windows XP machine, you can copy the MSconfig file to your windows 2000 pc. I downloaded it from the web, but I don't remember where from. The MSconfig file from a 98 Machine works on 2000 as well, but gives some errors on use because 98 has system files that Widnows 2000 does not (config.sys, ect...) A+,MCP

Rfung65,

1- Go to the Windows registry
2- go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run
3- Take a look at what files are being loaded at startup
4- Delete the strings that causes your problem

Do not delete if you are not sure (can cause some issues)
