    Replicating logins across servers

LDAP is definately prefered over NIS. NIS can be a bit of a security risk (basically, it defeats the purpose of shadow passwords). LDAP is fairly easy to set up on most linux distros and can be done over a SSL connection for added security. Most distros also have an easy method for setting up...

    Offsite Archive for DR

Hi, I was hoping for a command line option to put it all into an automatic script. I've just found my solution... bpmedialist -hoursago 24 -media Cheers, Darren.

    Offsite Archive for DR

Hi, Thanks for that. I hadn't thought of freezing it. I already have a seperate pool for offsite archives, and have a script which automatically creates the archive copy for me. The question is, how do I know which tape to freeze/eject? Is there any easy way to tell which media was written to...

    Offsite Archive for DR

Hi, I'm just working on building some extra disaster recovery into our backup strategy and would like to ask if the following is right and feasible. (4.5GA Datacenter on solaris) Currently, all backups are done to an L180 with 4xLTO1 and 4xLTO2 drives. Backups are running great (thanks to help...

    System information command.

Sedj: Not wanting to be picky, but also not wanting misleading information left on the forum. df -k / will only work when the filesystems are 'badly' set up (lets not start a flame war on filesystem layouts). The standard way to partition a filesystem is to have seperate partitions for /, /usr...

Slow backups to LTO1 and LTO2

Cheers for that, got it working now. I had adjusted the buffers before but the backups stopped working. Looks like the key was shared memory. I set the shared memory to 4.5Gb, and the buffer size to the recommended for LTO's (262144) and now my backups are going at about 20Mb/s Thanks, Darren.

Slow backups to LTO1 and LTO2

Some of the areas will have large amounts of small files, but the main area that is getting backed up is an oracle database partition full of a small amount of large files (50 files, about 80Gb) and is taking about 4.5 hours to send to tape. The disks are connected to the server with dual 2gb...

Slow backups to LTO1 and LTO2

Hi, I'm currently having some speed issues with our backups using NetBackup (4.5GA). To both LTO 1 drives (with LTO1 tapes) and LTO 2 drives (with LTO 2 tapes) I'm getting an average of about 5Mb/sec being backed up. I'm backing up from storage directly attached to the master server/media...

    Question on Cname in DNS

To elaborate: Suppose you set up your web server on server1, but set up a CNAME of www pointing to server1 and publish your web address as www.xyz.com. server1 blows up and you quickly set up the web site on server2, then rather than telling everyone a new address, you simply change the CNAME...

    linux network

Is ip_forwarding turned on to activate routing? cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forwarding 1 is on, 0 is off. To turn it on: echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forwarding There's probably a cleaner way to do this for slackware, but just putting that line into /etc/rc.local should be all thats needed...

    sendmail is not working

Most log files are in /var/log, there shouldn't be any log files going into /etc at all! Mail logs will be somewhere like /var/log/mail.info or /var/log/mail/* To restart sendmail, try /etc/init.d/sendmail restart (or stop or start) A good way to see if any errors are occuring in sending mail...

    NFS with NIS or LDAP

Don't use NIS if you are in any way bothered by security. Encrypted passwords are sent plaintext over the network with NIS and can be sniffed and put through a dictionary cracker. LDAP over SSL or TLS is probably best to go for. Darren.

Sending and SMS from a PC using GPRS and a SIM card

We use the system from: http://smstools.meinemullemaus.de/ at work with quite a bit of success. Its open source, so you could get some pointers from the code if you do want to write your own.
