Is there any nice tools out their for replicating user logins across linux servers along with their passwords.

Baiscally so I can add a user on a master server and it gets replicated on another server automatically.

You could use NIS (once known as yp or Yellow Pages), NIS+, Red Hat Directory or one of the various incarnations of LDAP to do this. Basically what you need is a directory server.

LDAP is definately prefered over NIS. NIS can be a bit of a security risk (basically, it defeats the purpose of shadow passwords).

LDAP is fairly easy to set up on most linux distros and can be done over a SSL connection for added security. Most distros also have an easy method for setting up the clients. The added benefit of LDAP is that you can then tie it into most other services run around your network (smtp, imap, svn, etc.) and you end up with Single Sign on.

Cheers,

Darren.

Many thanks for everyones input I did look into the NIS but read the issues on security and that put me off, also I read that the NIS+ is no longer being developed.

I will take a look at the LDAP as that may be the answer to my problems.
