Dennis is correct about using a character tag in FrameMaker, but you can bring in the Word text in a way that preserves the superscript so that in FrameMaker, you can see which characters need the superscript tag applied to them.
If you're bringing in an entire Word file, choose File, Import...
Greg, most printers do, indeed, accept PDFs. That's the way to go. Often, if you ask the printer about their desired settings, they'll have a handout sheet for you.
Be sure and go through the Job Options settings in Distiller before you distill the job. If you're working on Windows or Unix...
What you have to do is create the gradient-filled letter in another graphics program. It could be either a vector program like Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw or it could be a bitmap app such as PhotoShop or Corel Paint. Then you export the letter to a file in a format such as .eps, .wmf, .gif...

The generated files in a book must have the same name as the book--plus the correct additional letters--and must...
Bill is right, but I can add a couple of ideas. Can you get the sender to give you a PDF (Acrobat) file? The viewer, Acrobat Reader is free from Adobe. Or, if this is going to happen a lot, there's a better (I believe) and cheaper filter product called mif2go from Omni Systems (www.omsys.com)...
