why when i paste an object onto a new layer doesn't it line up exactly

Eugene: I always forget about that one, I have been using Illustrator since 3 versions before layers and have never gotten into the habit of using some of their features. Bert

why when i paste an object onto a new layer doesn't it line up exactly

Those Tek-Morons really ought to add an EDIT button! I have asked several times in the past, but nooooooooo!

why when i paste an object onto a new layer doesn't it line up exactly

OK, now I'm starting to feel like Andrew (apepp) with a whole slew of posts, but hey... Another cool thing you can do with Paste-in-Front is when you want to add something to the contents of a clipping mask, just Copy or Cut your object, then select the contents of the mask but not the mask...

why when i paste an object onto a new layer doesn't it line up exactly

By the way, if you just "paste" as a rule the object will be positioned in the center of the work area as you are viewing it.

why when i paste an object onto a new layer doesn't it line up exactly

jb: Are you pasting (Ctrl-V) or using Paste-in-Front (Ctrl-F) when you paste? Ctrl-F will paste EXACTLY in the same place, but in front of the original. There's also Paste-in-Back, which pastes EXACTLY in back of the original. FYI, if you are copying/pasting and you want the pasted object to...

    Measuring Problem

km: John Slate did indeed know what he was talking about. He was very knowledgeable in Illustrator and Photoshop. He had a fatal heart-attack December 30th of last year. He is missed in the Adobe community. Bert

    Orange Skin Effect

    1. Draw a rectangle, then make some copies like this: 2. Select the left ends of the rectangles, and drag them down so that the left side of one rectangle is even with the right end of the one below: 3. Make a symbol out of the result. 4. Draw a circle: 5. Delete the left half: 6...

    Multi coloured cube

...to keep it "Live", make six squares, and fill each of them with one of the colors you want to use. Make six Symbols out of these squares, then extrude your cube. Go to the Map Art option, and find your way through. When you apply any one of the symbols to any of the sides, and make it fit...

How to trim the white off of scans

Live Trace is perfect for this. The nice thing about live trace is that it's pretty flexible in its settings, AND there's an option to look for strokes, and thus to come up with an editable line drawing other than just outlines. In the dialog, simply go to "Inked Drawing", and in the menu...

changing the size of a textarea

...unless you're on layer 2, in which case the selection will be red. If you're using a text area, and you want to re-size the box without scaling the text, grab the Group Select tool (White arrow with + next to it), and click EXACTLY on the edge of the text container, without touching the text...

    Unkown Error

The most frequent cause for the "Unknown Error" is a corrupt font. Try saving a document without any type in it, and see what happens.

    Gradients for Screen Printing

PG: Substrate meaning what are you ultimately printing on, T-shirts or other things? The banding issue may be resolved by rasterizing the gradient first. Also, there may be a problem if the printer is postscript 2 instead of postscript 3. Bert

    Gradients for Screen Printing

PG: We may need a little more detailed information to help you. 1. What type of substrate are you printing on? T-shirt printing requirements are quite different from printing on plastics and metal... 2. The "lines" in the image, did they occur in a pattern? Were they perhaps bands rather...

    Vector HELP!!!!

Not nearly enough there to trace. You have NO resolution, it's a tiny picture, what do you expect? You are better off using the pen tool and re-drawing it that way. It will take longer (depending on your proficiency with the pen tool) but it will only take half as long as you think because...

    Creating a bottle?

Jim: That's some great taking-wind-out-of-the-sails dude... Jeeeez. OF COURSE it's possible to make a refraction, in fact it's fairly easy, and there's nothing tedious about meshes, unless you're an unskilled hack. Bert
