The most frequent cause for the "Unknown Error" is a corrupt font. Try saving a document without any type in it, and see what happens.

Not nearly enough there to trace. You have NO resolution, it's a tiny picture, what do you expect? You are better off using the pen tool and re-drawing it that way. It will take longer (depending on your proficiency with the pen tool) but it will only take half as long as you think because...
