Orange Skin Effect

1. Draw a rectangle, then make some copies like this:

2. Select the left ends of the rectangles, and drag them down so that the left side of one rectangle is even with the right end of the one below:

3. Make a symbol out of the result.

4. Draw a circle:

5. Delete the left half:

6. Go to Effects>3D>Revolve, and in the revolve dialog, choose "Map Art". Turn preview on, it helps.

In the map dialog, apply the Symbol to the surface of the globe, and check the button "Scale to Fit", also turn off geometry and make sure shading is on:

That's really cool. What are symbol are you applying to the art? The left half of the circle?
