Do a search for "Normal.dot" and rename it to "Normal.old".
This will rewrite the Word template. Word should open correctly.
Two causes for the shutdowns that I can think of...
1. Power supply..may not be running properly or not enuff juice to run every peripheral.
2. Memory error .. memory fills up and craps out.
Hope either helps.
Since the Athlon XP 2100+ runs at 1.73GHz, my guess is that Windows 98 SE is the problem. I have found that after speeds of 1.6 GHz upgrading to Win2000 or XP is your most likely solution.
One application that goes un-noticed is Marketscore (formerly netsetter). This installs with some versions of AOL. The typical way to know if it was installed is to run a find for the file NSCHECK.EXE. Usually in the C:\windows\system folder. If it is there, you want to uninstall it. To do so...
Same problem here with SoundMax. However I was concerend that it had to do something with Win98SE running on a P4 system. The MB is an Intel 845 w/ sound and lan.
Changed the board and same problem.
Was going to clean it off and install XP to see if it corrected the issue until I read your...
Try adding the user that logs into the Win98 machine to the XP and give it administrator rights. Both should see each other if everything else is correct.
Have had a similar experience lately when updating my girlfriend computer. Seems that there were file conflicts from her previous version of Win98 and Second Edition. First I ran this link to test the shutdown. Second I simply reinstalled her VB6.0 files and ran a repair on Internet Explorer...
Unfortunately, your agent has the Klez and Elkern viruses. Pesky things, keeps coming back if it isn't cleaned correctly.
You might want to download this removal tool from Symantec.

The removal tool will...
Any time I have trouble seeing other computers that I just networked and I AM sure that the cables are not at fault. I simply put the IP's and Hostnames in both the HOSTS and LMHOSTS files on both computers and that clears that up.

To make a boot disc without a cd and from the DOS prompt, just type the command : c:\windows\command\bootdisk.bat
This will ask you for a diskette and voila' --- you got a book disk.
You neglected to say what speed your P4 was. I have seen P4 1.6 GHZ + have problems simply with Windows 98. Perhaps you may want to consider moving to Windows XP. the error you are having concerns the Virtual Memory Manager. Win XP uses multi-threading as opposed to multi-tasking in Win 98 and...
Copying ALL the registry entries of ONE program is a chore, let alone several. I would simply format c: and reinstall my sys, then reinstall the programs (D: drive) to re-enter the ini's and registry entires.
The problem might be simply in your IDE controller drivers for the new board. If you have the CD that came with it and it has an IDE utility, run that and see if it clears up your cd-rom problem.
Shutdown (rebooting) problems are common in Win98SE.
Try the following link to the Win98SE Shutdown Supplement.

Try the following link to download and install the Intel Chipset Utility. Works on the 440BX chipset.

You never did mention just what chipset your motherboard was using. If it was an Intel chipset, you could've used the Intel IDE Utility to correct the problem.
It can be found on the Intel site.
