Got a couple of strange problems. On selecting MY COMPUTER>c:, Windows 98 SE reports different amounts of free space even if no changes have happened. If fact, if you close MY COMPUTER and then go in again, the amounts will differ. The figures varies between 21.6 MB and 653...
Neat little freeware program called REGCLEANER. This is
not the MS REGCLEAN. Allows you to edit or delete in the registry. AUTOCLEAN function really does the job. Creates backups just in case.

Had a similar problem in my wsock32.dll file. Had a worm virus.
Answer was simple. Had Norton's Antivirus Rescue Disks. Ran these from Msdos Prompt and Norton's fixed the problem.
Get Norton's Antivirus Free download, (30 Days), and create your own Rescue Disks, just in case it happens again.
Disagree totally. Brought back to life a 486Dx. Rebuilt it, heaps of parts available cheap or free. Put in extra RAM, yes it costs, but it's cheaper than a new computer.
Overclocked and running Windows 98 with a 56k Modem. Certainly puts a lie to the so called experts who reckons it can't be...
Thanks for your help, Jim. Could not do all you recommended but did the following:
1. Booted to SAFE MODE.
2. Removed Modem and all Com Ports in DEVICE MANAGER.
3. Rebooted and went into BIOS Setup.
4. Disabled Com 2.
5. Rebooted and Windows 98 detected and reinstalled the Modem...

PROBLEM: When Windows 98 first detects this modem, it sets up correctly and everything is sweet as.
However on reboot it changes all the settings and the programs can't find the modem.
Short of removing the modem through DEVICE...
