You can do it. The software I use batch processes attachements from Outlook/Exchange. I use it to:
1. Copy user attachments to a designated location.
2. Replace the attachments with a shortcut to the new location so users can still find them.

The first place I would check is XPs internal firewall. It may be blocking the ports you need to see the Exchange server. This would make sense as home use rarely includes an Exchange server on the local LAN.
