Probably it is not Photoshop's settings about the window problems. It is in XP settings, XP is very stubborn in many ways, because everything seems automatic.
If you are referring to the "icons" below the screen, it is in the XP settings- with desktop- I not sure.

In PS7 and other graphic softwares, you have to see what the ctrl key can give you especially with the pentool.
You have more "control" over the paths being created.
To see what's beneath, Dimoj was right, click on that button to see the path itself.

You can do that with In Design.
Any picture file, but you cannot drop and drag that from other programs, you have to place it.
Place the desired object. Select, then under the object menu choose clipping path> detect edges.
Then just adjust the settings to the desired output.

I believe you're trying to creat the round-edged box like in the Flash / FH softwares.
Adobe, as far as I've experienced, doesn't have that function.
The fastest way is to create one from macromedia then export the image as EPS. Then, import it to Photoshop as EPS.
