Boot in safemode (f8 at startup) goto your device manager, remove your video card drivers, restart the machine. Install latest drivers for you card. I know this is not what you want to do for go to a "last known good config" but it will solve your problem. And is not a work around
Install service pack 1 it solves a lot of compatibility issues. I bet it has to do with your built in sound card though. Games require a lot of resources from the sound and graphics and when your sound is working off of the same thing as your processor and everything else it tends to lag out...
