I updated my PC's Windows XP at using automatic updates. It installed about 20 XP updates as well as other stuff... I do not have Service pack 1. Now after the starup, it seems to go into sleep mode. Monitor is blank and the keyboard and mouse are unresponsive. The drawers on the DVD and Rom drives open and close but the PC has no response, but its on. I guess I'd like to revert to the last good start but after the startup completes the PC is asleep, or just gone.

Boot in safemode (f8 at startup) goto your device manager, remove your video card drivers, restart the machine. Install latest drivers for you card. I know this is not what you want to do for go to a "last known good config" but it will solve your problem. And is not a work around

314503 - Computer Stops Responding with a Black Screen When You Start Windows

When you attempt to start Windows XP, the computer may appear to stop responding (hang) with an empty, black screen immediately after the power-on self test (POST) is complete and before the Windows logo normally appears on the screen.

This behavior can occur if one or more of the following elements are corrupted:
Master boot record,
Partition tables,
Boot sector,
NTLDR file.

To resolve this issue, follow the steps in this article.
