yes the distance is limited to 5 meters. you can add hubs or extenders to increase the distance. You should use them when you need the devices further than 15 feet. www.usbstuff.com is an excellent source for usb products. some of the stuff they have blows my mind.

most furniture ive seen has a seperate chase to keep 110v and cat5 seperate. Have you considered using sheilded cat 5 for this drop? The armored cable should block the EMI's from affecting the data but i wouldnt do it this way unless i had too.
