I have read som eof the posts and the "standard". The question that needs to be cleared uf for me is this.

If I am wiring a business for both phone and data, should I use "b" or "a"? Someone told me to use "a" for the phone and "b" for the data. I don't reaaly like using two different schemes for the same job.

Whatcha think?

Use b for both. This is the standard. Either will work for both as long as you keep both sides of the cable the same.

The only time i've used 568a is for crossover cables or if someone ordered 568a mistakenly

It dosen't matter which of the two standards that you are using just be consistent within a facility. (its actually better if you pick one and stay with it) but physically the difference is which of the colors (orange/green) are used on pair 2 and pair 3. Electronically there is a slight difference in twists per inch between the orange and green pairs. Almost everyone has an opinion on which of the two standards to use. As far as telephones go most phone systems are down to only needing one pair for telephones. but check with the vendor since I have been told that some AT&T/Lucent/Avaya phones will not work when plugged into cat 5 jacks because of an unexpected connection on pair 2. (I havent seen this first hand though)

If voting could really change things, it would be illegal.

I would use T568A for everything.
If you have voice and you use a 2 line phone, typically they use a USOC configuration, USOC and T568A are the same on lines 1 & 2 (pins 4 & 5 and 3 & 6) On T568B you would have to make a change somewhere to have line 2 appear on the correct pins (3 & 6).T568B puts line 2 on Pair 3 instead of Pair 2 as T568A does.
If you do any government work or residential work you will need to use T568A, so why not use T568A EVERYWHERE?

Whatever you put in use the same for both voice and data.
In regards to 2 pair phones, you just cross-connect to the proper pairs. I would have a hard time putting in 568A when most in the industry installs 568B.

Whatever you use I would use the same for both. I only put in 568B. I have only used 568A once and that was because the consumer had a 568A network in place.

Servamatic is correct in the fact that B puts line 2 on pair 3 but you only need to cross-connect to that pair. Not a big deal. I would have a hard time putting in 568A when most of the industry is installing 568B.

Servmatic, if you go patch panel to jack you don't have to even think about pair 2 it just appears on the pins.

If voting could really change things, it would be illegal.

Thanks for the input everyone. I think I will be sticking with B.

I use A for everything, its a good selling point that any outlet can be voice or data

you can get patch panles fro either A or B

I ususally use a blank patch panel with the same module I'm using for the outlets

from what I've been told it is just USA and Japan that use B as a standard everyone else uses "A

this is a TIA color coding standard on 8 conductor 24 gauge wiring for structure cabling not any US or canadian or japanese standard....it has nothing to do with performance, neatness, cost, or any particular reason....feel free to use either 568A or 568B for termination but it has nothing to do with any country or any particular reason to favor A over B or vise vesa.....
