    jdave, If you are blocking traffic on the 1721 then allow UDP 500 (ISAKMP) and TCP 50 (ESP) or TCP 51 (AH). This will allow you to create your IPSec tunnel.

    Try connecting to your device with another terminal program, like Tera Term Pro. I have seen instances where I could not connect to a cisco device with Hyperterminal, I used TT Pro and it worked fine....I don't know what caused Hyperterminal not to work - so if you find out make sure you post it.

    What VPN device are you connecting to on the remote side? Your access-lists have to match on each side of the tunnel, so make sure you change the access lists on the remote device also.

    When you do a sh ver, the last line will give you the configuration register. The config register should be 0x2102 to read from flash. If it is different go into global config mode and add the line config-reg 0x2102
