I might be wrong, i haven't used RH8 in a while, but i'm fairly sure there's a way to configure the login screen (GDM)......scout through the menus (prefrences somewhere?) for something to configure login screen :-)

You need to edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config file. Look at the XFree86 homepage (google will find it for you) for some examples and help. :-)

I don't know much about the hdparm stuff but i can tell you RedHat8 comes as a very bloated system, especially if you're using either gnome or kde as your window manger. Try disabling all the services you don't use and cutting down on fancy 'eye candy' desktop features. It took me a few weeks...

Creative don't support linux (as far as i know) but a third party driver should work well enough.....google has the answers ;-)
