What the f*** is going on??? I got the 3 cd's with RH 8.0, installed the damn thing (tried to do it 6 times, and 3 times the installation process stopped with 3 beeps I don't know why). Now RH 8.0 doesn’t do the following:

- use any of the 2 cd-rom devices I’ve got: Teac CD-RW and Pioneer DVD-ROM

- use SB Audigy, even though it detects it

- Connect to the internet (says pppd died unexpectedly: error 4 - no kernel support)

- sndcofig doesn't work - says the kernel is too old!!! Says it needs to have 2.2 or higher. Too old!!! in RH 8.0!!!

And there's more...

So I ask: why is that? Linux has never been too friendly, but this is the first time I get that ammount of failures? I had RH 7.1, then 7.3, and they didn't use audigy, but at least they could use the cd-roms.

I have good hardware: ASUS A7V266 + AthlonXP 1500+ + GF4Ti + External 56k modem etc., so I doubt this is due to my hardware. Is Redhat trying to get to a mental hospital or smth???

Did you run the checksums and verify that the CDs were good before proceeding with the installation? The setup process has a point where you do this, and it takes about 20 minutes per CD.

I had a HD freeze twice in the installation. It was due to using an old CD-ROM drive (4x) that has a weak laser diode. I encountered the same lockup when doing a Windows installation from that same drive. Of course, if you have purchased the media, you shouldn't have bad disks. Newposter

I purchased the media, and I did check it before installation. The problem is, after successfull installation, Linux works wrong. The OS behaviour is what troubles me - it can't use any of the cd-roms, this is weird, isn't it? And other things too.

Isn't there a specific version of RH8 for athlon builds??

Might be wrong though.

Sounds weird though becuase RH8 has got a 2.4+ kernel from install and should have no problem with any of your hardware (except maybe the audigy)

It sounds like maybe something went very wrong during the install.......can't help more i'm afraid.

which instalation type did you use? Was this an upgrade or re-install? Try installing everything (if you have the room for it), and may be worth it to switch to Mandrake or some other distro if RH isn't working for you. I'm running RH8 on a cople machines, and the only problem I'm having is with the sound cards... it sees them, but thinks they are lesser cards.
