Mixing drives may be problamatic, you answered your own question, except i would do this, Clone as many tapes as possible and then disable old drives after configuring it , only using it if restore becomes nessary.

SQL DB do not backup generally without modules as they are in use, you need to create dump directory to backup, usaully db will backup full even when incremental is specified.

I belive Nwadmin is still viable option on Unix, check monitor tab and look at the speed at which the drives are being writen too , it it apppears slower then increase your paralism, device sessions and stream more cleints\saveset at once to increase the backup performance...
