I have an ATL P3000 DLT jukebox that currently has 8 DLT7000 drives in it (with 8 free slots for additional drives). I run Legato Networker 6.14 on a Solaris 8 server. I am planning to add 4 SDLT320 drives to my jukebox very soon.

I am assuming that all I will need to do on the networker side of things would be to first create a new media pool for the SDLT media for the new drives. Then I would associate this new pool with each of the new SDLT320 drives. After that it would simply be a matter of creating new groups for the clients I migrate to the new devices/media, and associating those new groups with the new media pool.

What I would like to know is if anyone sees any big steps I may be missing, or if anyone sees any problem that might prevent this type of setup.

Thanks

I may be out of date, but last I knew, Legato didn't much care for supporting multiple types of drives in a single silo.

Hmmm...I'd like to find out definitively if any version of networker would support this. Anyone have anything else to add?

Yes, you can do this with NetWorker pools ... for writing only!

The simple reason is that pools only work at that point in time. Their purpose is to sort data and this is only done when it is been written. NW would use any drive when reading. This is the offical statement. If you want to really setup a mixed-media environment, then you must use AlphaStor as well.

As Wallace's link says, you have to set up the different drive types to use different pools, but recvoer needs you to manually load tapes before runningthe recover (or disable the drive3s of the type you do not want to use).

Thanks for the responses.

It looks like we'll need to re-evaluate our plans unless Alphastor comes in alot cheaper than I think it will. I was so hoping for a gradual upgrade path. I must say I'm pretty displeased with Networker at this point. Handling mixed media environments should be an integral feature. Otherwise, drive and volume pool upgrades must be done together and all at once.

Hello,
Mixing drives may be problamatic, you answered your own question, except i would do this, Clone as many tapes as possible and then disable old drives after configuring it , only using it if restore becomes nessary.
