I decided to use Timbuktu on both the PC & Mac.
It's not lightening (anywhere from 1400kbps to 800kbps) but considering that it's also changing file extemsions so i can work with the files on a Mac -- it's not bad.
Plus i can actually "See" and "use" the Macs from my PC. Open and close...
I'm using my built-in eithernet for my dsl.
I've tried to ftp to the ip address but i think my ftp software is trying to use the usual path that i use for uploading website files (Internet).
Even though i allow ftp access in Mac OS X and personal file sharing -- the best i can get is to "see" my...
I'm trying to use a Mac (iMac) as a backup machine for my PC.
Problem is transfering files. I set up file sharing. I share everything on both computers.
I've added a seperate nic card just for this with a static ip address.
Even though my pc says it has sent and received packets.
On the Mac i...
I use OSX on a G4 at work (Apple)and never have a your problem.
We don't use Safari though.
I heard that Safari is kind of buggy still.
Check for updates?
good luck........

what about the power going out--was the unit on at the time?
when i say reseat-i mean remove the part and re-install it.

thanks for your help.
I'll change the board to my usual brand and send this back on warrenty and add it to my pile of "what if" parts.
thanks for your help and the tip on the sdram/ddr.
i was using sdram but will change that too.
tom
yes--you're right about the FAT32 (duh).
The system has 512 (sorry i forgot to mention) so swap file should be plenty large enough.
The board will go at Easter but i still don't know aboput the low mem.
I've gotten that with Win98SE too (and tcp stacks).
Any ideas on the low mem issue?
I'm...
I'm built my son a new computer for college (ECS K7S5A board)and it gave me a low battery message-i replaced it and it's not keeping time. The computer stays pluged in but the time off is random.
He recently got a low mem error and I was at work but talked him back to a "last known good...
i have a problem with my new modem (new system i built).
It's seen when quering but won't dial out. Takes a long time-says it's dialing but when i listen on another line-i hear nothing but the dial tone.
I bought another modem and the exact same thing. I've been building for years and thought...
i think your bios will only see up to 128mbs for each slot.
it must be an older board and especially if you're still using 98
there is nothing wrong with 98 and 384 is cool too.
you may need to get your money back for the dimms and get 128's
but i could be wrong.
MaxBlast is the best 3rd party overlay for older systems.
it works effortlessly (?) with any brand hd.
if you can't find it to download i have one on my ftp site in a folder that you can download and save to a diskette.
i used it often when working with 98 and nt4 on older machines...
this sounds ugly,
see if the power supply is enough for the CPU, etc.
400 or more of a known brand.
see if the board's bios is up to date (be careful with this)
good luck,
Tom
you may need to upgrade/update your bios.
i had the same problem with an hp laptop.
apparently i was to install the upgrade before the Win2K.
you might want to go to dell's web site for info on this, reformat hd, fix bios and try again.
tom
if your computer is "REALLY OLD" you may need to make a dos entry that says ;
last drive = Z
that will assign an extra (s load of them)drive letter.
i had that trouble when taking out a 5½ drive and installing a cd-rom---no matter how many times i installed the drivers-the system...
i had a problem like yours only worse.
i flashed the bios to the newest version and everything is fine.
i at first thought it wasa thew power supply.
be carefull
Tom
try creating a boot disk on a Win98 computer - it'll give you CD support. Run fdisk and delete all partitions, create one FAT 32 partition, restart, then format c: /s
reboot
then you could make a directory on the C:\ and copy *.* from the Win98 folder on the cd, into your new dir-then run setup...
no problem with internet.
setup one machine (your best) for internet.
setup the other as a stand alone then setup your NetBEUI network from your stand alone to your best.
weather you want to enable sharing internet connection is up to you. this way you can leave your sensative data over the...
Sorry, but a crossover is required for a p2p (peer to peer)so the signal doesn't bounce back - by switching the 1st & 3rd wire and the 2nd & 6th (counting from the left of course)
Same thing with h2h (hub 2 hub)When using a hub-the crossover is done for you.
your system will be faster with just...
i transfer gigs at a time-p2p-just like you without any problems. I'm also using w2k though-but no matter.
tcp/ip will work fine-but NetBEUI is faster.
i don't beleive tcp/ip has any error correction.
check your cable-where did you get the cross over¿
i used to make my own but now you can guy...
thanks everyone fort your help.
my girlfriend has since "remembered" that she has an A drive for it AND she got it to boot up, like nothing was wrong with it, by pushing the reset button while hitting the power button and she threw in some F keys, at random, as well.
talk about dumb...
