So I'm trying to install windows on a friends computer. When i try to install xp or 2000 the screen simple goes blank after the inital screen which asks if I wish to install or repair an installation. Windows ME (which comes on her repair disks from Gateway) installs but then freezes up while trying to search for plug and play hardware. The screen becomes partially fragmented (ie. lines of odd colors appear) and the computer is frozen.

It contains a new maxator 30gig hd, new generic ram, a brookings motherboard (also new) and a generic mini-atx case and mini power supply (both new) The processor is also new. Any idea's??? Thanks a bunch ~Andy

this sounds ugly,
see if the power supply is enough for the CPU, etc.
400 or more of a known brand.
see if the board's bios is up to date (be careful with this)
good luck,
Tom

Try putting back the original memory. If you get farther you can put that new generic memory in and change the BIOS settings to disable the quick memory check.
Other than that try replacing one item at a time with a known good part until you find it.
