Well, the extension is a likely (nay, probable) cause.
While in X set the Mac to start up in 9 and hold down thge shift key when restarting. If the Mac boots without crashing it's a pesky extension conflict. And the cause is your print monitor... It seems that way doesn't it? Remove it, trash...
When attempting to open email attachments (via FirstClass in a Macintosh Managere school environment) users often get the following message:
The translator "ASCII" couldn't be found. Please delete the file "XTND Translator List" from your Preferences file and relaunch...
You may have to set the quotes manually rather than via Quark's auto curly quotes in the preferences (turn this off and try it).

Shift alt - [
Close quotes

Shift alt - ]
And so I tested it, knowing full well I have had this problem too... But did I get it now? No, all...
I think it is more likely to be your keyboard settings rather than the actual keyboard itself.
Do you know the country setting you have for the keyboard? US or British? What Mac OS are you using? Is it a US or UK version of Quark? Or...?
More details will help.

Tony
OKay... and the following is not something I would normally do... I have edited very large documents manually because, as Afral said, Quark isn't that good with justified text and when then rivers start flowing, it is sometimes the only way to get an attractive layout. This is often impossible...
Alfral... are you following me around?
Afral is right, but if you want to use keyboard shorcuts (far from lazy - just efficient), follow Alfral's instructions for settings and then do this:
Type the following
1
backslash (oblique)
2
Highlight the 1
Apple (Cmnd) - shift + (plus) to apply...
Alfral is absolutely right (he always is), if the client only wants to see text and not layout. Actually cllients should never have layouts even started until YOU have fully approved text. There is nothing worse than labouring over design aspects only for the client to make radical/any changes...
Hi Dawn
Not that I know of.
The best method would be to invest in and utilise Acrobat Distiller to produce pdf files which the client can then mark with amendments in Adobe Acrobat.
Ask for more info if you need to

I used to have constant problems with the Aux Dict, so I don';t trust it any more. Mine were always corrupting and failing to be found. When I was desperate to revive the aux I think I used to be able to import the text from the aux dict, create a new auxilliary dictionary and then run a spell...
Hi Jill
again
What you describe is quite normal. Screen size of documents is arbitrary. I have held a ruler to the screen too with the same results.
And print-outs, I have found, (depending on the printer) can be as small as 95% of the specified size. If the job is going to an image setter...
Hi Jill
I'm going to be lazy. Go to this link.

Here are a few suggestions for fractions in Quark. I think one of the response may lead you to what you need... though I guess you are already using the Make Fractions...
Alternatively - I guess you are using an inkjet - save teh document (page by page I'm afraid) as an eps - and then open the eps in Illustrator and print from there (placing the images in Illustrator rather than leaving them in the quark document). You won't be able to do much with the fonts...
What are the other settings in H&J?
You may have something checked on not checked which is causing the gaps.
Also, what font are you using and at what point size?
What are your column widths? and any other information you can give... text box, tracking, horizontal scale etc. Have you custom...

Of the list of extensions you give these are the only two I have in my extensions folder.
In the folder called Quark extensions there are none at all. In my disabled extensions folder thare are many including some of those you list.
You could try the 50/50...
Hi MArk
Will check out the extensions though my immediate thought is to try without "Enhance Preview". I used it once but never again... It caused me no end of problems though not corrupted docs.
More soon

Afral,
we may not know what Z is talking about but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist... and he did say this diagnosis came from a reliable source. And then, the reasons you give ARE the most likely, and relinking is USUALLY the way to go.
But where is Mark? Is he quietly reading these...
Thanks Z... this is the first time I have heard this reference. I thought if Quark lost a picture link it just showed up as missing in the picture usage dialogue and you just had to relink it when printing or gathering the file. I'm still not sure I fully understand how what you describe would...

I wish I knew what a null pointer reference was... I did a quick search but couldn't come up with anything that also mentioned Quark. As for the suggestion of dragging thumbnails, I would have to agree that this is worth a try. It's certainly got me out of trouble on a few occasions. You will...
Well I am used to problems in Quark and have been since it was first released. It's a great programme but has always had its flaws.
The greatest lesson I have learned when working with Quark is consistency and simplicity. The more elements you give it to deal with the more chance of problems...
