I have added an xtension to my quark to allow creation of fractions. The option os on the style/typestyle menu but I wondered if there is a way to create a shortcut for this as with the other type options already in there....
Here are a few suggestions for fractions in Quark. I think one of the response may lead you to what you need... though I guess you are already using the Make Fractions extension.
Respond if you are still having difficulty and I may be more awake. I've had a tough week...
I do not use any fraction programs or scripts. This is what you need to do. CMD (MAC) CRL (PC) Y-- Character. Supershift numbers: 33-50-50; Subshift: 0-50-50 -- Leave small caps alone as you should never need to alter this default. Whenever a fraction comes up type in 1/2 then use supershift for numerator and subshift for denomiator. The subshift numbers tell Quark to put the denominator on the baseline (hense ZERO) and then size it the same as the numerator at HALF the size of a capital letter at the size be used. This is all that it takes. NOW if your on the MAC use a option 1 for the actual fraction bar!
Good Luck! Oh BTW this work in Pagemaker too! Let freedom ring!
Thanks guys... I figured out how to create the fractions I wanted but was being lazy really and wanted to be able to apply the 'make fraction' command (which does exactly what I want it to do)using a keyboard shortcut rather than having to go to the edit/type style menu each time! Is this possible?
Jill
Afral is right, but if you want to use keyboard shorcuts (far from lazy - just efficient), follow Alfral's instructions for settings and then do this:
Type the following
1
backslash (oblique)
2
Highlight the 1
Apple (Cmnd) - shift + (plus) to apply superscript
Highlight the 2
Apple (Cmnd) - shift - (minus) to apply subscript
You will then need to highlight the whole fraction and track it tighter as the gaps are rather unsightly. "Make Fraction" actually kerns the spaces between the digits and the obliique.
As for option 1... ? Alfral... what is this meant to do? All it gives me is an upside down exclamation point. And what is the point of reducing the size of the digts? ISn't this what super and subscripts does for you? Or have I missed something?
"Make Fraction" reduces the size of the 1 and applies a baseline shift to raise it. And then just reduces the point size of the 2 and leaves it on the baseline.
Now, is this easier/quicker/more efficient that going to style>type style>make fraction? Probably not. And if you are using a Mac there is most likely a way of writing a script or assigning keys to automate this process, but I don't know where to point you at this stage.
Tony this is alfral. . .to paraphrase: As for option 1... ? Alfral... what is this meant to do? All it gives me is an upside down exclamation point. And what is the point of reducing the size of the digts? ISn't this what super and subscripts does for you? Or have I missed something?
I think you pressed SHIFT 1 instead of option. Anyway the option is the third character which is a REAL fraction bar a tab more slanted (on the MAC keyboard) at least. I don't know where the fraction bar is on the ASCI keyboard character set(PC). Also the numerator is supershifte - fraction bar is normal - denominator is subshift. Then copy and paste this where other fractions are needed and replace the digits. Let freedom ring!
