The answer is now posted on captaris.com - Rightfax 8.5 does not work with Win2000 SP4 without patching Rightfax. Rightfax needs to be patched to SP5 - that's the server and the client apps, then it all seems to work properly!

The media server is in a W2K AD domain, complete with DNS (no WINS anywhere here!) but the NT box is not. I can browse to it through Network Neighbourhood but could that be because it is now in the hosts? I can't remember for sure but I don't think I could browse to it previously... Will try...
