how do i use the substitute and replace functions from the query design grid? can the be used as expressions in the field row or criteria row? what about within an update or append query?

i tried the replace and substitute functions in an update's and append's criteria row. now i'm writing an expression based on iif.
- which didn't work.
where would the replace function be written? not the criteria row.
