Kiddpete's idea would work well here - try selecting the stained area (brush in Quick mask mode) and create a layer from the selection and try the screen blending mode; then just adjust the opacity and use the cloen or healing brush a the the edges.

Check the brush settings (brushes palette) - that a dynamic effect hasn't been applied. In the options ensure that the eraser is using the brush, not the pencil or block.
For a gradient opacity blend, you may want to consider using a layer mask with a gradient applied to it.

Try Irfanview as a viewer - there is a 'set external viewer/editor' command(shift+E) that you could use to send any of the images that need editing, to Photoshop.

I think you can upgrade any version (assuming you have a valid license), but the CS2 installer only recognises 5.5 and above - contact Adobe about upgrading from v2.
