I am a skinner for a Sims 2 fansite, and I create clothing textures using Photoshop CS2. I used to use Photoshop 7.0, and always loved the results I would get with the tools I utilized the most, (blend, smudge, dodge and burn, etc.) Since I started work on a dress with a patternless skirt, I have been noticing that the blended areas of my textures do not appear soft, as they did in my old version. The transition from a light area to a shadowed one looks very pixellated and harsh, even when I use the smudge and blend tools. Everything is at the default settings, which is how I have always kept it. This problem makes it impossible for anything to look softly blended (unless it is patterened) which is an absolute must for the work that I do. I have lost about two months of work due to this, and am very nervous that If I dont do something quickly, I could be in trouble. I never fiddled with any of the settings, so I dont understand why everything looks different. My monitor is the same as the one I was using before, and I can't think of anything that would be causing this other than some hardware setting. I have spent countless hours looking through them, and not findng anything that made any difference.

Just for reference, I am viewing the same texture any time I try new options. Then when I change the options, I use the smudge tool to see if the resuts are different.

Five months ago, I got a new video card, and three months ago, I upgraded the rest of the computer. About a month ago, I upgraded to CS2. I have been on many other forums in search of help, as well as seeking help from other people that do the work that I do, and can't find a way to assist me. Most of the advice I recieved had to do with the pixels per inch, 8 bit vs 16 bit color, or the settings of my video card, none of which seemed to make a difference with my old version, (7.0) on my old computer. I am inclined to think it must have something to do with this computer in particular, because I have viewed the same texture on other computers, and it has been fine, once I used the smudge or blend tool to correct it.

I am honestly at my wits end, I dont understand why this would be happening, and havent a clue how to fix it. I am keeping my fingers crossed that someone out there can help me with this. I would be grateful beyond words. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

I don't know what you mean by the 'blend' tool. I've never seen a tool with that name, and Photoshop does not identify it in its help system.

If I want a smooth transition between two areas that have a distinct boundary, I use the patch tool. It's always been quick and effective for me. It 'blends' the area without any loss of sharpness.

I appreciate the suggestion, but I need a more permanent fix. There is some fundamental reason this is happening, and I need to get to the bottom of it. This has compromised my ability to work productively, and It is threatening my job.

Thanks again for the tip, and quick response, But although I may be able to find a quick fix for this, the problem is still there, and I need to know why.

What resolution and pixel dimensions are you working at?

Moe: It could have been a real ugly situation, but luckily I managed to shoot him in the spine.
