Just a quick update for you, it was pretty easy in the end.
1. netsh firewall set opmode enable just returned "ok"
2. I stopped the firewall service ( as recommended in Linney's first link) This acheived what I wanted to achieve. If only everything was that easy!

IMO you would be better using the disaster recovery switch route. I have done it in a production environment, it is pretty straightforward and painless. (more or less!)
