Was a fix ever found for this post? I'm having the exact same trouble. I installed another copy of Exchange server, thought whoppee, let's look at my status and it's tough, server unreachable. Everything else works very nicely thank you very much. I'd love to know what's wrong and how to correct...
You'll have to set up the mailbox you want as a separate account - it's this account that needs the auto reply. The easiest way to do this is to log on to this account and use the rules wizard (in tools) to have the server automatically generate a reply message to incoming mail as you desire...
This happened to me too, it's very well hidden.
OK, in system manager go to Global Settings\Internet Message Formats\Default, bring up Properties and on the Advanced tab you have all sorts of options including automatic replies. This could certainly have been documented a little better...
I would also check in Active Directory what the Display name is as that's what it's going to appear in the address list and also whether you have inadvertantly ticked to hide the entry from the address list. Please don't be offended if this seems childlishly simple/obvious - I've done it before...
