What you are trying to do involves some actionscript, it's best you try simpler stuff first if you are learning.

i don't think you can use any of those languages in Flash other than simple HTML, im sure there are workarounds though...

is that code embedded into a FLash application? If so, I think that's the problem, I've had lots of problems with putting web languages into flash in the past other than simple html.

Just make sure you use some video editing software first to edit out the background, so you can have the person move any where!

Try looking for IRC Java applets, that might do it? Or else you could write one if it is just for one on one messaging. I remember seeing a tutorial on how to set up a server and a client applet on the Sun website.

You could always just make 2 pictures, one for the UP state and the other for the down, if you can't find any other solution. This is the most tedious way though, thought I'd throw it out though.
