Thanks Waho, I did not take note of your link until now!! I was confused about your question so I examined your response again and saw the LINK you placed there. Maybe you should somehow introduce a link with a few words like "Try this link ....."

    Deleting windows files

C:\Windows\INF has some 1,600 files of *.pnf, *.inf and *.adm types. Can I safely delete them or at least the old files? c:\windows\prefetch has 10 files located there of *.pf type. Can I safely delete them or at least the old files? Thanks

    No programs listing

It took a while but I finally d/ld all the files you suggested and ran them in the equence you indicated. They found a few things but nothing major. The only program that required a reboot was after Combofix. Thanks for the help.

    No programs listing

The original problem (few programs listed) seems solved. My lingering questions are: When/where did I get hit by a virus? Did my anti-virus prog kill it? Are there more installed programs that are not showing up?

    No programs listing

Thanks for the starting point. Found a reference to "unhide" by BleepingComputer. Sometimes you get hit by a virus that moves folders around and hides them. The unhide tool apparently restored the missing "Program" references so I could get the Programs Listing from the start page. I now show...

    No programs listing

Pressing START+ALL PROGRAMS in the past gave me a listing of all the programs (over 100) that are installed. There was like 60 names each in 6-8 columns Recently, that key sequence lists only 2 programs. Where does XP get the info to display? START + "User Explore" shows all of the programs...

    Slow link access

I am using Chrome and win xp sp3. Once in a while, while waiting for a web site's page to open after I click on a link I get an info message to wait for the page to answer or kill the page that's waiting. I don't know if it's Chrome or XP that controls the wait time for a page to respond but I...

Controlling the Drive Letter (DL) associated with USB connected Disk devices

I am using USBDLM with success to control the drive letters of my HDDs. I am running 12 HDDs for 14 partitions and only needed to assign drive letters for 3 or 4 of them.

Controlling the Drive Letter (DL) associated with USB connected Disk devices

Thanks. But I have the problem of some shortcuts/programs/dlls calling a specific drive letter and when windows assigns a different letter to that drive, my calling shortcut/program doesn't run. I try to keep C: with about 50% free space so I have the habit of downloading free or purchased s/w...

Controlling the Drive Letter (DL) associated with USB connected Disk devices

I found USBDLM which is supposed to control all features of USB drives. In reading their documentation I get very confused. It's an elaborate and complicated program with hundreds of options. Does anyone have experience with using USBDLM sucessfully? Thanks

    Installing HP C4280 software

I have been with HP's various sites. Many "experts" have solutions which I tried but to no avail. I still have these questions: Why is windows trying to "configure scan"? How do I stop this procedure? There must be some program/services to record in a readable file what programs are called to...

Controlling the Drive Letter (DL) associated with USB connected Disk devices

PC: Dell 4600i, XP pro SP3, six USB connected disks. When I boot up I examine the DL associated with my disks. There is usually one disk which needs to have it's DL changed because some of my shortcuts/programs require a specific DL to run. Usually F: must be changed to G:. Sometimes another...

    Installing HP C4280 software

PC: Dell 4600i, XP pro SP3, USB connected HP Photosmart C4280 printer. Troubles after installing HP C4280's Full Feature (FF) s/w. I did a fresh download of the s/w and did the recommended procedure of (1)Clearing the TEMP directory, (2)Downloading, extracting the System, (3)uninstalling...

    Start - Program Names analysis

Thanks everyone. I changed my DPI from 96 to 120 and it made the text VERY readable. It changed the "START+My Programs" display from 4X33=132 max to 5 columns with 31 programs per column = 155 displayable program names max.

    Start - Program Names analysis

Thanks for everything. At 1152X864 I get 4 columns of 37 programs = 148 max. The resolution ratio is 1.125 vs 1024X768. I think I will stay at 1152X864 and try to get used to the text at that size. I will experiment with the DPI change.

    Start - Program Names analysis

Thanks strongm, that was the clue I was waiting for. I use a screen resolution of 1024X768 and it produces the list as I described (4 cols X 33 programs each = 132 displayed program names total). When I tried 1152X864 I got many more programs listed. I didn't count the program names per column...
