It seems like I need to do the slipstream job. (Maybe I did it a year ago, have to search my cd's.)
As far as the hotfix goes, it seems specific to mup.sys, and I do NOT have the mup.sys message (although I have other similar messages), and as pointed out elsewhere that IRPStack errors can be...
You have given me homework for the weekend!
Also, I'll have to search thru my cd's for a cd I made >1year ago that booted recovery console (some other stuff too maybe) since my original WinXp cd is NOT sp2.
I was hoping to bypass all this muck this time around.
See ya later.
Thanks;

Since I can boot in safe mode, I was able to follow the instructions from the url posted by linney. However as I suspected I don't have recent backed up restore points. (And I can't use a config thats 2 years old! With wrong drive info.) Can BertPe help me now?
What else can I try?

It looks awfully similar. My url is: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=177078
But they both differ in
a) solutions
b) By me it happens upon boot.
Which makes me suspect that there are more registry entries for this type of error. Even though they share two key similarities.

Seems like I have restore option off! When I choose "try last configuration that worked" from the boot screen, there is some disk activity, and then back to the blue screen.

ps. To compound the problem, I have to boot into linux to post here, and need to re-boot to try any suggestions...
Hi;
On a machine running xpHome SP2, I suddenly upon boot, get the blue screen with message:
NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS
....
STOP: 0X00000035(.....)
I can boot into SAFE MODE only, which I did in order to:
a) UnInstall McAfee
b) Modify the registry per article 177078 in MS KB. I had to create...
Hi;
On an xpHome SP2 system, when I run Windows Update on net 1.1 frameworks it fails with 'application has generated an exception that could not be handled'.
This happened with sp1 as well (fwiw).
Your help is appreciated.

Well, of course I can try use a buddy's machine. BUT, at what price!<g> I mean like this, 'oh while your here, can you just check this, install that, verify the other'. You know what I mean. Then, I would have to ensure the friend's machine is properly protected, etc., fix all his/her problems...
One key problem. I have but two computers here.
The Windows machine is not booting due to missing boot.ini and netldr files. The other machine, still working is a Linux machine, which I can use to create a cd from an iso image. But, I cant run any Windows programs on it.
Thanks

Is the cd from microsoft a bootable?
According to the site, this is a free cd, there must be an iso image available on the net! If you know where I can dl an iso, please advise.
Thank you much.

Thank you much. My problem is that my other pc (which I am using to post this) is Linux, so I cant do the slipstream procedure because it requires Windows. Can't I dl an sp2 image from someplace? (The legality of my install is verified online anyhow, when updating. And I do have the original...
My system has 2 drives, with xpSP2's home drive being drive E:, the 2nd partition of the second drive. I didn't realize that the C: drive, which was a crashed leftover of an old install was actually being used for boot stuff, and I formatted (!) the C drive. Now, the thing won't boot.
The...
Thanks.
If anything valuable is to be retained from this thread, I would say that beware of oem pre-installed xp, and be aware that many articles in the knowledgebase assumes plain shrink-wrapped windows(or include oem in you keywords), and most of all, if you have windows xpHome pre-installed...
Ok, thedaver, actually I have spent my time taking exactly the route you advised, for the same reason. (Although one reason for going to Linux, was to actually help RECOVER some data.)
Let's see your list:
> 1) Fix XP
Re-installed. But many apps have to be re-installed and re-tweaked.
