One thing i forgot to mention is using ADV FILE TYPE of Device to backup, you can run all your incrementals to file type device, ( no cost except disk space on NAS or server).
No disk backup licence is required, then you can just backup once a month and keep it offsite for a year.
You can still...
Not a oracle admin myself, i have forwarded the question to the team, from what i do know, the oracle is saying the write failure to the disk\hardware might have caused bad block
( Raid or data correption-dont know)
Oracle utilities reporting bad block (corrupted block)on the Disk, i cannot find any errors related to that or other in Windows 2000 server inviroment, the server is P-DL380, Raid 5.

Use tapes and inquire command to list your devices, reconfigure the tape library, use nsrjb -HEvvv to reset it.
Appreas that networker is getting confused.
Disable any divices you do not use.
Can you explain the index recovery process, is it via nsrck -L7 client name ( merge it with existing index)or just replacing index directory for the client in question on the backup server after recovering it.
There is a mminfo switch that lists client ids on the server, also, i have renamed clients often no problem as long as you use the same client id.
last resort you can plug in old or new aleas in aleas feild to fool the networker. ( depending on which client is working) You might also be able to...
Tapes are getting cheaper every day, last i heard LTO1 about 20 dollars, you can do better if you buy used one on ebay, so i would do monthend retention for 1 year atleast.
First you may benifit by looking at more faster CPU for your server.
Check any updates to your SCSI cards or improvements.
Dont know how much you backup and how, from what you have 12 drives, it seems there is lots to backup, i think you should look at VTL solution so that you can backup faster...
I apprecate your comprehensive response, i am evaluating powersnap module for SAN backup of Clarion, in your openion what is the best backup software in such an enviroment.
In case of LTO, the chip records number of times its been used, also some networker utilities such as tapeexcer can be used to diagnose a problem along with drive manufacturers own utilities.
Also inproperly configured devices might trough read errors or could be lose or bad cables cards etc .
Does any one have links, ideas and information on how Networker features compare to say Galaxy ? Netbackup, which one is your favorate and why, has any one switched from or to Networker and why ?

Were you ever able to use Archive funtion correctly with your NAS ? is this supported in Legato ?
There may be other archival software better suited for what you are trying to acomplish.

This is causing backup failure of entire group the next day the group needs to run, unless stopped manually, it started hapening recently.
My server is windows 2000...
I would check the Virus scannning or any other automatic process like spywhare detector, firewall etc that could qurantine the directories, limit the number of users\admins.
uninstall all unnessary programs from the server and if you are sharing file or print services on the backup server...
To my knowlede if you cannot identify the individual Networker process in task manger to stop, the only other way might be restarting Networker server services and if other backups are running, that could be detrimental.
Perhaps if you have large enviroment isolate problem clients in different...
Why not backup over lan and abandon NDMP until a fix is found, if its a large amt of data that could be a issue, hoeverlong it takes you to backup, even if it take a week to backup, atleat you have a recoverable data. ( May only be applicable to Windows NAS)Where a client can be installed.
