I've been using Acronis True Image for a 2 years, never let me down. Just check for the proper version.

Rebooting (this might be Hardware problem as well,since haven't solved yet), can't install updates, unlike in XP you need to create system restore checkpoint, msconfig's autoboot...

So, i do agree with DataInSight - hopeless...
Wohever, you could take your HD to the nearest HD recovery center and see what they would say (you'll feel like you've done your best to recover disk).

I would say that you should check that all your hardware and software is going run under Vista. If you are happy that your hardware is really fast, then go for Vista.

It's called online backup (offline backup is pretty same).
I have no any experience with that (since doing backups on external disks, seldom over network).

Well usually "recovery process" can be done if on the HD physically data is not overwriten. I'm afraid, there is nothing you could do with that,
However, try to contact any recovery companies.

Well, you should be looking for Acronis True Image backup software.
It has scheduling feature, so the utility will backup regularly itself.
