The suggestion to change the IP address using ifconfig will ONLY work until the NEXT REBOOT.
There are a couple of files to manipulate to make the change permanent.
I believe the link above will explain this toyou, I just wanted to reinforce the idea that ifconfig is not permanent.
First off, I don't think that by today's standards it's "so inexpensive".
Second, it is slow.
I think it should be obvious that for an EXTERNAL drive, that USB would the choice over parallel. That's because you will get MUCH faster data transfer via USB.

My girlfriends PC (running Win2k) turns itself on all by itself...how is this possible?? If the machine is off, at different times of the day it will power on - I am at a loss to explain to her how this could be -- she thinks it's ghost. Please help me so I can convince her it isn't!!!

Do you have a CD Burner Installed?
If so, is your ASPI layer up to date?
Win2k has problems loading the ASPI drivers if they are the incorrect version...
Be careful here, there are WinNT and Win98 ASPI drivers that seem to work but are NOT for Win2k.
Also --> Do you by chance...
Here's how:
START -->Programs -->Accessories -->Command Prompt
Then type "ipconfig" (without the quotes)
--OR--
START -->Run Type "Command" (w/out quotes) ipconfig

I would need just a little more info on how your network is set up...but the quick answer is NO, your machine would more technically be more of a gateway, and less of a router (in some cases the two terms have become almost interchangeable) anyway, if it linking machines on a private network to...
