Question, can somebody tell me why this product is so inexpensive? (the second one down - SKU 6406EU). Also, is it better to have a parallel port CD-RW or USB? What are some qualities in them that would make them more desirable than others other than the r, w, and rw speeds? Thanks for any help!

here's the link.

First off, I don't think that by today's standards it's "so inexpensive".
Second, it is slow.

I think it should be obvious that for an EXTERNAL drive, that USB would the choice over parallel. That's because you will get MUCH faster data transfer via USB.

Feature wise, besides R, RW, etc., SPEED and CACHE SIZE are the main considerations.

Look around, I'm sure there's a better drive for the money out there.

QUESTION: Why external?? Internal is going to give you many more options.

Sorry, didn't mention I have a laptop. Thanks for the help.
