    Excessive backup time

    What type of job is running on Thursday nights; full, differential, incremental? What type jobs run on the other nights of the week? Have you tried loading a 2nd tape to see if the job continues running?

    Has a 2nd tape been loaded to see if the job resumes? If the job resumes this is an indicator that the data being backed up has already been compressed by a software application and cannot be compressed again by BE.

    What is the overwrite protection set to? The overwrite timeframe starts when the backup job ends, which can create this sort of problem. Set the overwrite timeframe for one day shorter than the normal retention period. No need to erase tapes to go to scratch. Under the media tab locate the tape...

    Has a 2nd tape been loaded to see if the job resumes? What alerts are being posted under the Alert tab? If there is data that has already been compressed by another software application on the drive in question, it cannot be compressed again, which sometimes creates the need for a 2nd tape.

    Backup-To-Disk

    Is the overwrite protection set to one day for the Media Set being used? To do this click the Media tab, right click the media set, left click properties, and set the overwrite timeframe.
