Try something simple like:
echo $string1 >> /tmp/string.log
between the string1= and the if.
For seeing if somethings running you might need to do something similar to your string1= line like:
script1=`ps -ef | grep scriptname`
Then see how many lines it comes back with.
Try a netstat -v en# to look for the current duplex and speed settings.
It should give similar results to a entstat should do in later versions of AIX.

Have a look to see if you've got bos.adt.base installed:
lslpp -l | grep bos.adt.base
If you have then try looking in /usr/bin to see if it's there. If not, put the fist CD in and go to smitty install_latest and install the bos.adt fileset.

Have a look to see if you're hardmon process is running on the cws. This seems to be the first thing checked on an spmon -d.
Do you get any output from the command or is just the one node acting up. Also, make sure the serials from the cws are connected to the nodes correctly.
