I have two hosts I can connect to. One is called rs6000
and it's AIX 4.3.1.0 and the other is called homer and is
Solaris 2.6. I cannot ftp between homer & rs6000. The following message appears:

netin: Connection reset by peer
421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection

ftping between rs6000 and my PC is very slow. ftping between other hosts happens at normal speed. Any ideas?

Please cc responses to tony.mcguinness@amt-sybex.com

Thanks in advance,

Tony

Check to me sure the line speed and duplex setting for your network connection match the switch it is plugged into.

Thanks for your response. However I cannot find anything about setting speed & duplex setting on the IBM web version of the man page.

# entstat -d en0 |grep -i speed
Media Speed Selected: Auto negotiation
Media Speed Running: 100 Mbps Full Duplex

Replace "en0" with your adapter.

I got nothing from the entstat command. However I can do the following

tonym@rs6000:/usr/tonym >ifconfig en0
en0: flags=e080863<UP,BROADCAST,NOTRAILERS,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST,GROUPRT,64BIT>
inet 129.69.200.70 netmask 0xffff0000 broadcast 129.69.255.255

I suspect that I should not have SIMPLEX appearing here, but I don't know how to change it.

I tried lsattr and got nothing about the duplex setting or the speed. I would like to know how to force the interface to DUPLEX

tonym@rs6000:/usr/tonym >lsattr -El en0

You have to specify the "ent#" interface, not the "en#" interface. You are querying the hardware level. I realized that I forgot to specify that after I posted. You can change it from "smitty devices"

Thanks for you help.

I tried smitty devices and there was noting there about selecting full duplex or simplex

Let me clarify. The "simplex" will always be there. That is separate from the "media_speed" of the hardware level.

Try a netstat -v en# to look for the current duplex and speed settings.

It should give similar results to a entstat should do in later versions of AIX.
