There is a rule of 5-4-3 for better performance of the shared ethernet Network.
But practically if you connect the fifth one, if works absolutely fine. Only hitch is the network traffic and nature of this traffic on your network. You may or may not get the performance as desired.
It seems that the network point where you are connecting your laptop is having problem. try connecting the same laptop at some other network point in the same subnet and it should work.

have you tried configuring machine 1 manually (i.e. static ip configuration)?
